Not being satisfied to sit and mope, I busted out the editor and learned the following things:
(* requires that you already know how to expand the compressed game content for editing purposes)
- You can 'import' the single-player maps to your multiplayer folder
- They are instantly playable as PvP as long as players are not allied
- You can edit the factions such that certain players that join may or may not be allied with the single-player enemies (* noteworthy)
- You can also edit factions such that a certain players that join may be allied if they are in the right slots (* noteworthy)
So...Why bring this up?
Because I think I have a multiplayer co-op sulotion. It requiers one player have a 2nd PC available to act as their game host/server though. If you're interested, read on...
I started this 'conversion' project several years ago but I never finished editing and testing the maps. If anyone is interested in playing the single-player missions with a friend in co-op mode, this is how it could work:
- Import single-player maps to multi-player folder
- Edit factions so that the first player slot is allied with the enemies, or at least NOT allied with all the other player slots.
- That player slot will be used by the 'HOST' PC that will create the game and act as the game server. No body actually plays on the 'HOST' PC, it's only there to keep the game active because connecting with just 2 allied players = instant victory. You need to have at least ONE enemy player on the map for the game to stay active.
- Edit the map to have the 'HOST' player's start position spawn him in a secluded area/sealed room (lockpickable door) at/near the END of the mission area(s)
- Connect multiplayer clients with apropriate level / equipment, play through the single-player mission cooperatively
- When the mission is complete, open the door and 'kill' the host to end the mission...or just disconnect.
I got as far as completely editing the maps for factions and player spawn points, but some bile hit the fan IRL and I never finished the project. Still, I wanted to share the info in case there was anyone else out there interested in trying this.
Enjoy.
(* If I get back into it, I might release some edited maps, but that depends entirely on how much time I have available to dig back into this.) If you see Metal Maniac, let him know I'm looking for 'em.
