Good Character Build?

Post » Mon Aug 10, 2009 8:11 pm

Okay, so I got Morrowind a while ago, but, despite how many times it's described to be the best ES game, I can't get into it. I think it's my character. I really would like to get into it, but considering that I can't really do anything but wander the cities, but it's getting boring. So could you please reccomend a good character and good weapons? Sorry if there is already a topic about this, but I couldn't find one yet, so I made this one.

There are some slight spoilers here, but you might want to check out http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Starting_out

Give it time, and build a good character. You'll eventually find/feel the rewards of what Morrowind has for you.
The game can be very difficult at first, until you properly get your bearings.

Can't help you with a good build since those all depend on the player, but warrior characters are generally easy to play and good for beginners. I'd try out Heavy Armour, Block and Long Blade. Aside from those everything else is pretty much optional and depend on how you want to play. I definitely recommend having a way to handle locks and traps (either security, enchanted items or a combo of alteration and mysticism) and a way to heal.

My favourite warrior type character I've played isn't a pure warrior (I love using characters that multiclass rather than straight warriors, mages or thieves) but here she is as an example of a character I had a lot of success with when I was fairly new to the game. Maybe this will give you some ideas about how you want to make your character.

Female Nord Sentinel (Currently L30ish) Can't remember my specialisation or favoured attributes.
Birthsign - The Lady (Endurance is great for warriors that need to take a lot of damage, Personality boost is great earlier on to get extra money from merchants as well as dealing with NPCs in general.

Majors;
Block - A good idea to have if you're holding a shield, completely prevents damage occasionally.
Restoration - My way to heal.
Hand-to-Hand - Pretty useless, it's just funny as hell to run around punching everything to death. The speed boost gained from using it a lot can help counteract a warrior's low speed though.
Long Blade - Main form of attack. Loads of good swords available throughout the game.
Heavy Armour - Quintessential warrior armour type. Reliable defense, you can get some ridiculously good heavy armour items throughout the game.

Minors;
Armourer - All of your armour and weapons will need regular repairs and this sort of character is easily strong enough to lug around repair hammers.
Alchemy - In theory this was for healing when magicka ran out but I ended up never using it. A lot of other players would use this more than Restoration in this build though.
Mysticism - Removes traps, traps souls, does other useful stuff that I didn't really use.
Alteration - Unlocks things, lets you breath under or walk on water, plus loads of other fun stuff I didn't really use.
Speechcraft - Mostly filler. Still very useful though since so many NPCs are more useful to you if they like you more.

Thank you, but that was not what I was asking for. I was asking for a Good character build, not a begginer's guide. So, if you or anyone else has a good character build, please post them here. I'm open to any type of characters.

The first thing I said in my post is that good character builds depend on the player. There's too many possible things to do or ways to play in Morrowind for there to be any objectively good character builds, it all depends only on your playstyle. There is no such thing as a single good character build, only opinions. Do you want a character that's easy to play? One that can do a bit of everything? One that can do the main quest well? Once we know something more detailed than 'good' we can help you. Please don't just say you want a 'fun' character either since that's as opinion based and unique to every player as 'good' is.

I plan on playing story mode and Morag Tong, and sorry Warhammer, you posted before right before I did, while I was reading Pluto's link, so I was responding to Pluto, not you, but I'll definitely try your character.

I apologise for the slightly irritable tone in my second post then.

Really you can do any faction with any skills but to advance in them it's best to have some majors that are the same as their favoured skills so you can advance without having to grind all the time. A common character type for Morag Tong type stuff is light armour/short blade/marksman as far as I can tell. They favour Acrobatics, Illusion, Marksman, Light Armour, Short Blade and Sneak so having three of those as majors should be good enough to get by. Acrobatics pretty much raises itself if you jump a lot (which I do a lot because it tends to be quicker to jump everywhere than walk everywhere as a heavy warrior) so a warrior type character could get by in the Tong by having Sneak, Short Blade or Illusion as the other Morag Tong skills, from a flavour point of view. Using Short Blade and sticking to short swords rather than daggers fits a warrior flavour-wise. You need to have one of the favoured skills at 80 and two at 30 to be allowed to do the quest that makes you Grandmaster. The Warrior I detailed in my previous post has over 90 Acrobatics at L30 even though it's a misc skill so it's really just the two 30s you have to deal with. Might be worth adapting stuff I've said in this post into the character you're trying.

the game allows unlimited training and there are ways to get enough gold to pay for it. so if you want to be the head of every guild and fraction, you can. or you can just join fractions that go along with your main ten skills. i often play as a nightblade. so i usually ignore the fighters guild and doing quests for the imperial legion.

Yeah, it's relatively easy to get a ton of gold early on to just train yourself up. But that can get really boring. To me, Morrowind is the best in the series because of the lore and sense of exploration it has. The actual game play is kind of... Not that fantastic.

As for builds this is my favorite personal build:

Birth sign The Lady or The Apprentice
Favored Attributes If you chose The Lady: Endurance And Strength. If you chose The Apprentice: Intelligence and Strength.

Major Skills
  • Long Blade
  • Light, Medium, or Heavy armor.
  • Alteration (for opening locks, water breathing, levitation, feather)
  • Mysticism (for teleportation, intervention, soul trap)
  • Illusion (for invisibility, paralyze, charm, night eye)

Minor Skills
  • Alchemy (so potions actually have a affect on you, and for making healing/restorative ones.[list]
  • Armorer (just becase I like repairing my own gear.)
  • Sneak (necessary for stealing guarded stuff)
  • Speechcraft (could be used with/or as a alternative to sneak. Taunt people into attacking you so you can legally kill them)
  • And the final skill is a wildcard. I sometimes grab destruction or another weapon type for this one.

There are no good builds in modless morrowind, only svcky and grind builds. If you feel the urge to make a good character and cant combat it, youre out for a major counterintuitive grindfest. Just do what feels right and play the game.

(unmodded, breton is the best race, atronach is the best sign )

I'd advice you to pick one and trying to get into it. What interests you the most? Being able to open every chest so that no-one sees you, hit-and-grind with your best sword/hammer or having been able to cast any magic anywhere, or any other type? Pick one. Try to play that character for a longer time and see if you can get into the immersion that really is there - far better than in Oblivion in my opinion. Or, if you still want to try these characters, feel free, but come back to the guy you like the most. :)
