Xbox 360 Controller and Descent

Post » Thu Apr 16, 2009 2:28 pm

I've been experimenting with the Xbox controller on Descent. it works pretty good actually. the only real problem i have is trichording and shooting at the same time lol

I was using Descent 2 Rebirth.

Image

umm...the right trigger, X,Y,A, and B were cut off...

RT is Slide Up (Use the axes menu)
X is bank left
A is bank right
Y is Cycle Primary
B is Cycle Secondary

another problem i had was accuracy, but i think that after using the controller, i can get used to it :)

what do you guys think?

99.9% of Descent players use a joystick with a twist. What type of feedback are you looking for? You dont' seem to be asking for any in your post. Impractical. Tried this config and my custom config too. First times I used it, I failed. I also tried the mouse for the first time in my life for D3 and I was still faster than the 360.

And no, 99.9 do not use JS's. I'd say 55% JS, 44% Mouse, 1% pure KB. 2 people I know use KB only. Used to be 3.

lol i asked what ppl think in my post. i think thats asking for feedback lol and i just want general feedback and an brief explanation

and yea cypher i know its impractical, but its the best i think i can come up with. i can fly it pretty good, but the accuracy is horrendous :/ well practice makes perfect! ima try to work at it as much as i can :)

oh and i use a mouse and numpad config to play normally. idk if thats weird haha

A crazy controller for Descent would be the Saitek X52. Plenty of crazy buttons on that thing! Infact, more than what is needed, even for extra features.

The next step would be to link with the computer directly. Really, we already have that technology, but it is for the filthy rich, completely disabled people, or those who are disabled and lucky enough to be selected for testing it. No commercial usage though. :( If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

Problem for me with finding a good joystick for descent is alot of them don't allow you to use the hat switch and use your secondary or center measure/flare buttons simultaneous. The ms line still seems the most practical to me. Unfortunatley you have to buy them used now. If descent came out on console they would have to have a pc joystick that would work usb or wireless for it. (entirely possible) Though at the same time, by the time d4 is made the ps3 and xbox systems will probably be obsolete (or atleast have to have the game "dumbed down" to run it)

t

the crazy buttons part of that made me think about this game that came on the original xbox call steel battalion. there was a crazy amount of buttons for that game! ive never played it, but it looks totally crazy! some guy at kmart told me about it haha

my reason for bringing that up is that i think that possibly i could work for descent? idk haha someone should look into that :P

Yea, sounds fun. I was planning this for one of my video games(after I learn a ton of astro-physics, geo-physics, and some XNA).
But heck, I like descent, so here is what I propose:

-We can use a WII style setup to rotate the ship. (possible how you rotate/pivot the remote itself)
Turn controller left it turns ship left. Turn controller up it turns ship up. Turn sideways it turns ship sideways. (That's 6 inputs already)

The rest of the controller is done in PS2 style but with only one directional pad and with triggers:
-A left trigger to fire missiles. A right trigger to fire guns. (can be swapped)
-Two more buttons on the index fingers for flares and mines. (can be swapped i.e. right handed left handed)
-Directional pad:
-Push pad up to fly up. Push pad down to fly down. Push pad left to fly left (without turning left).
Push pad right to fly right.
-On the other thumb three more buttons: Forward, Back and Afterburner w/ forward.
The rest is done the old-school way using keyboard (weapon selection etc.) Absolute Velocity svcks. It’s too slow.

Well I think that the XBox can have a seat!

http://www.rahulsood.com/2010/07/console-gamers-get-killed-against-pc.html

I knew it all along! I've tested it and I believe it to be true. In my experience, Mouse + KB > Controller, Joystick >> Controller.

Who here flies with a controller? I challenge you! If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

Keep in mind, the existence of that program/competition is still just a rumor.

I have a Saitek Cyborg Rumble gamepad (take a look at it: You can swap the left joystick's and 8-way button's position with it) and I find it very hard to control the ship with it, and that is because you need three controls for that. I have accelerate/bank on the right stick, turning (l/r, u/d) on the right one, and sliding on the 8-way button, and I wouldn't know how to operate them all at once - which is none of a problem as soon as the keyboard is involved.
