Descent for the 3DS?

Post » Thu Apr 16, 2009 3:59 pm

With Descent coming to the Wii would it be too much to ask for a version for the 3DS? I don't really have much, or any really, interest in the wii. But the 3ds looks sweet and would love to see Descent on it. It would likely push me over the fence on getting one. The anolog control on it would make flying much easier than previous versions. Of coarse it wouldn't be perfect as there aren't enough buttons for full control but I guess you can't have everything.

I'm wondering how the controls could work. anolog for look obviously, arrow pad for slide. Coarse that means you couldn't look and slide at the same time. Unless you used the accelerometer for the movement. Tilting for fore, back, left and right then the arrow pad for the up and down slide. Which begs the question how far you can tilt it before the 3d stops working? Anyway then you could control roll holding down alt fire and using the anolog stick. Well enough rambling from me what do you guys think?

I remember getting really dizzy playing this on my Power Mac back in the days. Controled amazingly well with the keyboard… Good Times!

Oh wow, are you still alive?

"Of course", btw.

And had I told you already that your nickname looks quite funny for Germans? In German "Lehm" means "clay". ;) Image

Yeah, I'd be concerned about controls, but it would be worth a try. Plus, the original Descent had support for VR helmets, which were stereoscopic, so that might make a port to 3DS easier. I never had a VR helmet or knew anyone who had one in order to try Descent on it, but I would imagine Descent would be insanely sweet with depth perception.

I wonder if the touch screen could be used? Maybe for weapon selection? And to show the cockpit so it doesn't take up room on the 3D screen? Of course some may want the "F3" option and see the cockpit in 3D. :P

Let's see, off the top of my head... anolog control for aiming, accelerometer forward/backward for slide up/down, accelerometer left/right for banking, shoulder buttons for sliding left/right, ABXY buttons somehow for forward/reverse and fire primary/secondary, D-pad for less often used functions like flares, and prox bombs, touch screen for weapon selection... It could work... I think they should keep the options for fully customizing the controls, though, but maybe come with a couple presets that playtesters liked.

I just had an awesome thought: Automap in stereoscopic 3D! :P

I think the best use of the lower screen would be for the shield and laser indicator (and afterburn if we're talking d2). Perhaps the automap button. I think it would get too crowded after that. D2 has 20 different weapons after all. I would put weapons cycling on the d-pad. I don't think the abxy buttons should be for both weapons and thrust. You can only hit one of those at a time. So you couldn't move forward and shoot at the same time. So either the thrust or weapon firing needs to be on the shoulder buttons.

And yes Diedel I am still alive. Hey how much of my code has survived til now?

deftflux,

if you want to see Descent in 3D, install D2X-XL, get a pair of red/cyan anaglyph glasses and turn on stereoscopic rendering in D2X-XL. ;) Image

This is a neat Idea, I like it but see a problem with it having played the 3DS at E3. I didn't play any games that had accelermeters in it, but if the 3DS has those it would be good. However the 3D screen has a small range of scope where it works in. You don't need glasses or anything remember, so you have to be within a 15 degree angle of view from perpendicular to the screen to get the best 3D effect. If you are moving the DS for accelermeter use then you'll also have to be keeping it perpenducular to your visin as you do it, but it's a good thing there is a physical slider on it that changes the depth of the 3D and turns it off. Which I would definatly turn off for my wifi multiplayer games. ;)

The top view would be a hud/fullscreen view with only crosshairs and maybe energy and shield numbers/gagues. The bottom touchpad would switch all your weapons on the sides and have a realtime map in the background. Then a box with a rearview window so you can see the sneaky ones. If you were to pause/change to map then you can see the map in top screen in 3D while you are able see the hud in the bottom background.

The controls if there were no accelermeters however would be very techincal. It may suit to have a strave/look switch so perhaps you could use forward and backwards and then hit a key when you needed to strafe all of a sudden. Just some ideas... But I'd soo buy a 3DS for this. I'd buy one anyway, the 3D pictures are cool :) Pilot Names: Space-Invader Klein | Memory Thief
