1) They are not making Descent 4 yet.

2) They ARE making Descent for Wii.

3) You can play the old Descent on new computers, Just use dosbox http://www.dosbox.com/.
Or you can download D2x-xl for better graphicshttp://www.descent2.de/.

Rest assured. If/When the next Descent game lands, it will be for major consoles first and ported to PC. Very VERY few games in the last year or two have been made for the PC first. oh. .they said MoH was, but when you look at the internals and the gui, it's all console. Don't hold your breath for personal dedicated server support or lanning. Those days are pretty much gone.

On the other hand, gamesas has yet to publish a major title in this new life and as it's normally the publisher that calls those shots, we will have to wait and see what kind of business model they decide to run.

Yeah right. If it was ported from the console, it would be a second rate game compaired to any 3 of the current ones.

Chris, end this dispute with a yes or no on whether D4 will be for consoles too or if it will be ported from consoles.

Porting the 3 on the other consoles too would probably gain revenue. You don't have much to lose. But the controls will be murder. I would get all 3 again for the Wii. That has more freedom of movement (and that must be why Descent is coming out on the Wii and not the other 2) If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

Not "officially", no. gamesas has said they want to continue with the franchise though. Mind you, that will depend on how their business is doing. They've already had a very rocky restart with the (no pun intended) fallout from Bethesda. If they manage to turn a profit from that project, then I think there's a good chance we'll see another Descent. ... mind you, it will be a number of years down the road. :|

I think they've been saying that for the past decade or so, ever since the third game released.

It should also be worth noting that quite a few development studios code their games on a PC and later adapt it to a console. So a game could turn out to be Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 exclusive but it would have been developed on a PC anyway and probably even run on one too.

This is also cost efficient for a studio that may not have the money to put a console development kit on every desk. As to why certain games have a "console" feel to them, that's really something only the developer can answer.

well Im hoping things turn around and they make it. but we will see what happens. I know making an old game might be hard on xbox 360. but listen doom 1 and doom 2 are on xbox 360. its why i thought of having descent 1 and 2. that would be awesome if they had descent 4 also. ill be so happy :)

Another great option is DXX-Rebirth; which also supports all opterating systems and this one still retains Descent 1 and 2 series with it's original look, thanks to this, it runs on numerous VGA cards as well, besides a new-gen ATi or NVIDIA VGA.

As what I have experienced and heard from others, is that DXX-Rebirth is very stable and user friendly, we have implented UDP for stable network performance as well on any OS out there, as a main DXX-Rebirth Beta tester named as Gold Leader, I find this the best Open Source Descent project out there, but hey this is my personal feeling about it, like that of many others 8-)

I wonder if dealing with the Sony company might be the biggest obstacle to introducing any of the Decent games to XBOX 360. Sony is very motivated in their own exclusivity. Look at Betamax and now the new Blue Ray DVD. That said, I would expect Sony would want a guarantee of the game's intended popularity and then would want an extremely high profit-margin.

Nintendo likes handing it to Sony where it hurts though, as evidenced by the Wii. That's why I think we're seeing Nintendo being more interested in a Decent game right now. Should Decent really show strong sales on Wii, you can almost bet Sony will want it too and try to play catch up. They want to be on top.

I have to grudgingly agree with future games showing up consoles and not PC's. Although I love the PC games of the past, you see very few today. Microsoft still puts out some amazing games for PC, so in that, I beg to differ. You don't see any of the many flight simulators for Microsoft showing up on any consoles. And they are becoming excellent.

I think putting out a simultaneous D4 game on PC is important. Even if it costs a little extra. You really don't want to put all your eggs in one basket, nor bite the hand that has always fed you.
Of course, that will be an gamesas corporate decision.

Who said they were dealing with Sony?

gamesas is a licensed developer with all the major platform companies IIRC and a company with a lot of weight behind it, I don't think the platform holders can "bully" them around in the same way as they could to an Indie outfit that doesn't have the same sway behind it.

You're not paying attention.
Sony is the manufacturer of the Xbox 360 console, in which the title of this thread says
"Are you making Descent 4 on PC and Xbox 360?"

Sony is behind PlayStation, Microsoft is Xbox.

I am sorry.

You are right. Sony backs PlayStation.
It was my own son that set me straight on that one.

Well, same is true if we're talking about Play Station. Sony might not be as willing to back a Descent game unless they saw it was wildly popular on the other consoles first. That's the point I was trying to make.

Now, about Descent being on Wii, if that's true, I'd like to buy it. My daughter has a Wii that I could play it on, and on a 42" LCD tv screen, it should look more fabulous than it's ever looked on a PC.

That brings up a question I had wondered about. Do any of the Descent games work on Apple computers, by any chance? Or does that take a special emulator to work? When I do replace my desktop computer, I want to go with an Apple. I'm just not sure if any of the old games are compatible.
I could also see getting an old Windows 2000 or earlier PC computer dedicated to play only the old games and never access the internet. That isn't good either though, because you have to get to the internet at least to download patches. So maybe just very limited Internet access.

After reading gamesas's report, they state (generally) that Descent (as well as other titles) are in production or pre-production. It also states that they (the games) will be released on ALL platforms as well as phones. and mini players such as the DS.

The doc is a PDF scan so I can't cut and paste. :|

You mean THESE documents?

Duper, you could have just linked it. :P

And it was obvious that Descent was already in production in the back corner. It just IS and you know it when somebody says that they can't disclose any details.

And on that bombshell, we manage to find the details ourselves! :P If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

It can be harder to believe for people who have been continually disappointed for so long. When I die I want to be dissected by some mad genius and used in one of his evil schemes.
