Descent Poster?

Post » Fri Apr 17, 2009 3:00 pm

Kyouryou has a huge image file of an old Descent poster, but apparently has been forbidden to offer it publicly as that would be "a copyright infringement".

See the whole thing there: http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?topic=659.0

Dear gamesas,

please tell me what benefit you are expecting from holding this poster back from the public, and what damage from offering it? Do you think you could make a bunch of money with it? Do you think it would be bad publicity if that poster would be freely available? Do you think you'd lose a bunch of money when giving it away for free?

I doubt any of that would happen.

So please, put this poster in the public domain. Just slap some license on it that it is only for private use and must not be used for making profit in any way and everybody - including you - should be happy.

Kind regards

That is dumb. It's a frigin poster. What harm can come from allowing others to it? Other than getting mroe people into Descent. Beta tester for:Descent 3 1.5 Patch, C&C Generals, Independance War 2,Starfleet Command 2,Settlers IV,Tzar,Allegiance,Starfleet Command (Alpha & Beta),MAX 2,Defiance

Can't speak on behalf of gamesas but this post should give some insight on the games industry and copyrights.

All those considerations wouldn't hinder gamesas to explicitly release that poster to the public, just saying that it mustn't be used commercially in any way. I mean, if the Descent 1 and 2 source could be handed out that way, a simple poster should be no problem at all, or should it? Image

Well, as stated on the first page.

not in a position to grant a license at this time and any reproduction and distribution would be a copyright infringement.

Anything is possible. Assuming this poster was an official poster it's possible they don't have the rights from the company, artist, etc that created the original design. Depends on the original contract.

Artwork is different than code in its handling.
