Alternative operating systems

Post » Mon Apr 20, 2009 4:31 pm

Is there any plan to develop upcoming gamesas games for alternative systems such as Mac, Linux, other Unix-based OSes? I understand that developing for multiple platforms isn't a simple task, but such things like D2X-XL make me happy to see that classic Descent games are playable on *nix. Nothing against the Windows platform, but it would be nice...

I'd like to give you some good news, but honestly, from what I understand, we're planning on supporting Windows, the current generation consoles and, possibly, Macs.

Things can always change, but I'd put Linux support as highly unlikely.

That's kinda funny as Mac is unix based. :)

But, I'm not surprised. Although, I think if MS doens't get their act together with the "new" ,,,and I use the term loosly... OS, there is likely to be a large exodus to Linux by many.

Not that, that's a threat to MS in any real financial way in the short term. They're too well dug in from a marketing stand point.

But thanks all the same Chris!

If you are successful enough in sales, you should at least see if you can improve game compatibility with wine. Also, I don't really know this, but if Mac is supported, wouldn't it be just a small step to Linux?

Not such a small step, but yes, a step of sorts. I'm not sure about the specifics being only a novice *nix hacker, and I'm not even sure if OS X is 100% POSIX compliant, but the step from Windows to Mac is larger than the step from Mac to Linux.

It would be a nice thing to see gamesas testing their code on WINE though, that would surely increase revenue. (At least the computer-savvy niche of the revenue pie)

Mostly it would require being POSIX and use appropriate libraries (i.e. FMOD for sound, etc) Image
