Installing PS:Torment

Post » Sat May 02, 2009 3:05 am

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and knows a fix for it:

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3 and when I run the either the 'setup.exe' in CD1 or just tell it to install after the autoplay.exe loads up(same thing I know but different paths to the same destination might change things) when I do that I get the little hourglass symbol on my cursor telling me its starting up and then... nothing the hourglass disapeers and nothing ever happens, if I check my processes there is indeed a 'setup.exe' running in my processes, but its not in my applications menu on my task manager.

Well, maybe your computer is too advanced for the game. I mean planetscape is 10 years old. I have trouble running Fallout 2... and I need to Coax Fallout to run. Image

Hi,

I just replayed Planescape two months ago. I had no problems installing it on XP SP3, but there are some things I can recommend:

First I know it sounds somehow obvious but, rightclick setup.exe select properties and from there select the compatibility tab and select windows 98 from the dropdown menu.

Second I should note that I have the 2 cd version, I'm not sure if the 4CD version still works with xp SP3 but it was working with SP2.

Third, not entirely on topic but. You can install some goodies to make your gameplay exerience better. Like there is a widescreen mod and a gui fix for it iof you have a widescreen monitor, unnoficial patch that fixes some bugs and etc. I recommend that you check this link for more details: http://www.bootstrike.com/Torment/files.html

let me know if you still have any problems

Thanks for the tips muty, I actually figured it out last night after a while of web searching. I'm using the original 4CD version, I tried the compatibility thing and nothing happened, I also tried setting my processor affinity to one or the other CPU and nothing happened. So I rebooted into safe mode and was able to install it.

Unfortunatly I had the EXACT same problem when I tried to patch the game to the official 1.1 patch and had to reboot AGAIN to safe mode lol...

Yeah I saw most of those mods on another site as well... I wish there was someway for people to redo all the original sprites / backgrounds in PST and FO1/2 in a higher resolution/color bit I'd love to see some HD Fallout remake... but I'm guessing the original engines have a texture cap or something otherwise someone would have started that already.

I'm glad you figured it out I'll keep this in mind if I have the same problem.

Redoing the sprites for FO and Ps would be great, but I think its more of a problem because this is a massive amount of work even if there are no limitations.

Anyway I'm replaying fo1 right now and I'm using Timeslip's engine tweaks. It looks great when you run it in d3d mode with a scaler. I use advanced mame for the scaler and run it ina 1280x1024 window. I may say it looks great( colours are more vivid, text is more readable) but it is very cpu intensive. I tried the high resolution patch but it was crashing my machine completely.

I haven't installed timeslips patch yet, I was considering it. I ran the Hi-Res patch tho and to be honest I didn't like it. When you run it at a higher resolution the game kind of zooms out and when that happens it causes a few problems.

First off, some of the buttons become REALLY small and a bit difficult to click on at times

Secondly, when its that zoomed out the game loses some of personal touch, I feel more detached from my character and the game ends up feeling less like an RPG and more like a turn based tactics game. Not only that but when you are zoomed out like that there are less 'OMGWTFBBQ' surprises.

I might d/l timeslips tweaks just for the scalers though that sounds awesome.

After seeing your post I tried the high-res patch on my xp notebook. It works but running it on a 15' screen @ 1680x1050 looked terrible. I tried using d3dwindower to run it in a window but it didn't work.
One big plus of timeslip's tweaks is that you can run it in a window a and specify the window size :)

I installed a bunch of patches (all the TeamX patches, and timeslips engine tweaks) and the game kept crashing randomly, so I said screw it and now I'm just playing the 1.0 version (I have the original CD not the collection version)

Funny thing is until recently I was using the FO2 manual as a Mousepad ;P.. wonder if that phone number still works..
