Welcome to Freespace

Hey all,

This is Galemp, the man behind the Freespace Port, the mod that lets you play the classic FS1 campaign in the new and improved FS2 engine.

Thought I'd drop by and inaugurate the new gamesas forums here with a big, friendly 'welcome back.' On behalf of the Freespace community, who've been keeping the flame lit for ten years, I'd like to thank the people at gamesas first for publishing our favorite games, second for not selling the rights off to some talentless butcher, and third for reaching out to the community with their new website.

For those of you who haven't been keeping up, Volition(the developers, now owned by THQ) released the source code to Freespace 2 in April 2002, and the community efforts have greatly improved the overall graphics quality and gameplay capabilities.

This is an in-game screenshot.

It's also made possible total conversions like The Babylon Project and Battlestar Galactica: Beyond the Red Line.

In short there's been a LOT happening on the Freespace front since 1999. Here's some links to the communities:

Hard Light Productions
FS2 Source Code Project
Freespace Mods .net
Game Warden
Freespace 2 Sector

Most of the action happens on the forums, and we have a bit of an organizational problem in that there's not really a good place to click-download-install-play, but we're working on these.

Again, we want gamesas to know they have our full support, and there's a dedicated community out there that loves Freespace and would really, really like to see the original developers do more with the series. ;)

I'd also like to add that in addition to the graphics upgrades on HLP, myriad (50+) user add-on missions have been made for the game, ranging from 2 or 3 mission mini-campaigns to 40 mission whoppers (IIRC there's an 80 mission campaign translated from German, too).

If you want more freespace past retail, be sure to check out Galemp's link to FSmods and the Missions and Campaign section at hard-light.

BTW: Everyone on #Hard-Light knows who I am from HLP.

Galemp: You might wanna compare the same ship with original FS2 graphics to show the difference, I was amazed how everything looks now...

Shamil, indeed, truly thoughtful post, yet creative in its simplicity ...[/sarcasm] Image

The FreeSpace 1 graphics are the best by far.
