Fallout In 3-D???

Post » Mon May 18, 2009 7:12 am

I just saw nivida's new idea, 3-D Vision for computers http://www.nvidia.com/object/3D_Vision_Discover_Main.html and I was thinking how the original fallout(s) would look on it, crappy or good. First I don't know if will work (I hope) but I am downloading the new drivers now and going to try it as soon as I can get the glasses. What do you think it would look like if it could be done and would you do it? <<<>>>>

They wouldn't look any different. That 3d tech requires depth information, which fallout doesn't provide; those drivers are meant for z-buffer using 3d games only.

I can think of a way to rig it to work, but it would require every single non-interface frm in the game to be twinned with another data file to provide the height of the pixel above ground level, which would be an awful lot of work.

It may do. It's worth a try anyway.

You just need to build yourself an artificial z-buffer. Fallout 2 has a fixed camera perspective, so if you assume that all of the floor tiles are in the same plane, you can work out the 3d position of the ground. You can't do the same with scenery and other objects because they aren't all in a nice flat plane, but you do know the 3d position of the base of the frm, which combined with the camera perspective and height information would be sufficient to work it out. It probably wouldn't be particularly good though; the art wasn't drawn to be 'correct' in 3d, so there will probably be frms for which you can't create a reasonable heightmap. Definitely more work than it would be worth.
