Day/Night cycles and weather.

Post » Sun Jun 07, 2009 5:42 pm

Greetings all,

I've never liked games where its always daytime and the weather is always clear. They don't feel very realistic and can become boring rather quickly. I'm hoping Fallout Online will have equally long day and night cycles. I'm also hoping for randomly changing weather. Like cloudy skies, rain, fog, dust or sand storms and such. Snow would be a little hard to code.
I'd like to see the time of day/night and weather conditions directly effect the game. During the day cloudy or overcast skies would cut view distance by a small fraction due to less ambient light. Fog or dust storms would cut the distance even more. Rain would lessen visibility a little and also cause characters to move more slowly. Because of slippery pavement or mud. At night the darkness would cut visibility by 1/3. Any weather effects would stack on top of that.
You could lessen the effects of darkness and/or weather. By adding points to some abilities. Perception could give you better eye site and hearing. Agility would make you less likely to slip or get stuck in mud while its raining.
I think that having days, nights and weather would make the game feel more like you're in real world. Where as the same old static environment wouldn't. Thinking that you know anything about MMOs because you play WoW. Is like thinking you're a master chef because you work at McDonalds.

Seconded. Although, I like the darkness of the Oblivion nights.

Never played that game. Is the Oblivion you mentioned put out by the same company that did FO3? Thinking that you know anything about MMOs because you play WoW. Is like thinking you're a master chef because you work at McDonalds.

Yes. Bethesda. They are also releasing Fallout: New Vegas this fall. They also did Morrowind.

No, Bethesda is not developing New Vegas, I believe they're publishing it. Obsidian Entertainment is developing New Vegas. A lot of the people who work at Obsidian used to be part of Black Isle before it was dissolved.

generally the same but with other features i guess, but f3 never had any rain and hardly any real weather changes (well a mod fixed that but the vanilla version didn't have it).

And I hardly think that a postnuclear world have no rain at all, hell it's hot as hell and its near the coast so the water should evaporate, make clouds then fall down.. somewhere... :P Image

Would be nice, ast long as it was longer then 1 minute= 1 hour scale, give a bit of time to do what your doing.

Also, if the game is based in Iowa, the weather changing every 5 minutes would be completely realistic.
Rain, 90 degree day with clear sun bleaching rays, thunderstorm, another clear sky with 90 degree weather, more rain, tornado, another thunderstorm all in the same day. It's mostly a joke, but it is truth to it.(I also know the game isn't going to be based in Iowa so it is just a joke.) Wannabe writer/P&P game designer.

Day and night is a must today. Also weather with serious impacts on gameplay would be fine. Having radioactive sand storms, heavy rain etc. that e.g. limit travel speed and gives a little damage to armor would be cool and realistic. 8-)
Also having seasons would improve "reality". There could be snow storms draining your "energy" level a bit for instance. Of course they shoud not be too often but those random events would make it mor fun (to me).

As long as it's not too quick then I'm all for a day\night cycle. Personally, I'd love a system where the day\night is based on the servers clock, so that you night creatures with no jobs doesn't get to play in full daylight while all others are a sleep 8-)

Of course, this would only work if there are servers located on East, West and Central US, as well as Europe and Asia and those people down there with the wallabies...

could have that the time moves 50% of normal time (1 irl hour is 2 ingame hours, not sure it that is too long) Image

weather after the nuclear war will exist for 2 options;
First - ozone in the atmosphere would suffer irreparable damage. Sunlight would be devastating for all living things. Disappear for the most part all the plants. At the peak of solar activity, it is better not to leave the shelter, otherwise it will be possible to get not just serious burns and radiation dose. Remember the movie from Fallout 2 about the need to wear special glasses on the surface?
These options are perfect weather in the movie Mad Max, as well as the book Metro 2033

The next scenario - a nuclear winter, where daytime temperatures reach -30 to -60 degrees Celsius. Dry and cutting the air. Storms and bad weather. Lightning beating in the sky, predating acid rain.

So you never see the normal weather as you like at post apocaliptic world. I hope gamesas dont forget about that and will made so weather collapse... Image

Gromarog, I agree with you, but there are two minor corrections:
This two opposite aftermaths may balance each other. A dust raised to a highest layers of atmosphere, may take a function of disappeared ozone shield.
I doubt there will be any acid rains. There will be no industry to make enough air pollution for the acid rains.

But in all other cases I completely agree with you, post-nuclear weather will be severe. Excuse my bad English... I am a Russian bear, it's hard to type with claws.
