Open World PVP a MUST!

Post » Mon Jun 08, 2009 5:10 am

Out of all the MMOs I've played, open world PvP was the most fun and challenging aspect of anything. When Age of Conan was first released, many people that didn't have common sense complained that they were sick and tired of having their level 13s killed by level 80s. This however, is not such a bad thing.

I personally found it extremely exciting to learn how to run from those level 80s. You were constantly having to look over your shoulder to make sure that nobody was sneaking up on you and if they were, learn how to manipulate those stronger characters to ultimately lose you. Dying wasn't such a terrible thing either. Who cares if you got transported out of the immediate area you were in? Just head on back to finish up the quest and next time, keep a better look out.

Open world PVP added excitement and a tinge of nervousness to questiong and hopefully gamesas encorporates this! It's also realistic! In a post-apocalyptic world, stronger people would be constantly attempting to exploit the weak. However, I wouldn't even be against some sort of small penalty for say, a level 80 murdering one 20+ levels below him. As long as the engine allows for open world pvp to happen, I expect Fallout (a genre I've loved since the original release) will only be that much more exciting!

I agree, although towns/settlements should be completely safe.
And perhaps you shouldn't be able to attack players less than level 2 or 3? You know, so that they can get a feel for the game first.

Being a level 13 and being killed (especially constantly) by a level 80 is a bad thing when it comes to game design. You may find the experience fun, but the vast-vast-vasty-vasitly-vast majority of MMO players do not. Open world PvP is a very desirable thing... in which players would only want to opt into. For the most part, you need to provide the choice whether it's A) you can have a flagging system or B) certain areas are designated as PvP.

It is not a must and its not going to happen. So just forget about it.

I'm for having PvP FFA zones. Small ones that you don't need to enter in order to progress through the game if you don't want to. But that's it. Thinking that you know anything about MMOs because you play WoW. Is like thinking you're a master chef because you work at McDonalds.

I really won't play a game where the only threat of dieing is from NPCs. It gets boring really fast. I enjoy the constant thrill of open world PvP.

There are a LOT of systems that need to be in place for it to work, or what you get is some angry 10 year old running circles around starter towns, cutting new players in half.

Even in WoW, there's no strategy to avoiding a level 80 player riding down a level 20 player and one shotting them. You can either shrug it off and carry on, or rage quite.

If systems are in place to discourage noob PKing, the games gets a lot less 'rage quite'.

Sorry this is not going to happen.

Here is the official stance:

"If you heavily commit to PvP, you will be rewarded. It will be risky, but the rewards are designed to make it worthwhile. If you'd like to dabble in PvP, you will still be rewarded and won't risk as much. We hope to entice more people to be involved in PvP, without making it a requirement."

Which means "battlegrounds" for the ones that want to dabble, and Clan vs Clan for those that want more risk, the risk being the chance that ur clan gets camped 24/7 by someone else.
