Buy new forum software please!

PhPbb is absolute trash, has multiple vulnerabilities, and is a pain in the rear for the end-user.

Can we get some kind of forum software that caters to usability for the front as well as the back end. If you don't already know, phpbb is for the scrubs of the internet and shows that. You don't want your users to think that gamesas, as a company, are scrubs.

SMF, Vbulletin, or Invision Board will do. Yes, I am in fact being sarcastic

Are you being serious right now....

Are you aware how much Vbulletin, SMF, and Invision cost?
Are you aware that this is a corporation that makes games that run around 20+ million?

I'm not going to openly berate you for posting something totally asinine but I don't think you quite understand how terrible PHPBB is. Yes, I am in fact being sarcastic

We're happy with phpBB 3 at this time and have no plans on switching forum software.

I spent a little bit of time trying to collaborate your statements, and couldn't really find much. If you have any links to specific issues, please PM me and I'll check into it.

Thanks,
-Chris

There are so many hoops to jump through in PHPBB3 it isn't even funny. Setting permissions can be a nightmare and lack of a lot of features that you would otherwise see in vBulletin.

The history of shoddy phpbb security makes most people cringe. While vB hasn't been perfect, they've always been very quick to patch any found holes and are great at notifying their customer base.

There has only been two attacks in vB since the 3.3 days that allow for site defacement and total system compromise unlike PHPBB which has pretty much been consistant in having a few per year. vB is professional quality and PHPBB is not held to very high standards. I'm not saying it's not useful, it is free after all, but security has almost always been an afterthought. Security has been key to vB since 3.4 development.

phpBB3 has some bugs that query WAY too much, known for crashing servers.

VB adapts to new technology a lot faster and is leaps and bounds more reliable then phpbb3.

Spend the extra money and get a product with a proven track history. I could keep going but it should be fairly obvious to anyone who has been up-to-date with gaming communities from 1999 to now. This is gamesas, you guys have the respect and following to pull in a huge base on the forum. It is one of the most important parts of a gaming community in order for the company to interact with the community. Why not spend that extra $160 to show people you guys are back and serious about reviving all the Solid IPs gamesas is known for.

Look at it from our perspective. gamesas skimps out on their forum software, why should we expect them to not do the same thing with V13? I have used phpbb2 and 3 in the past, when you switch to Vbulletin you realize "Man, I have been missing out on so much." You can easily import phpbb into Vbulletin so you have no loss of data. Phpbb 3 is very stable and powerful. And it's affordable. The only problems you'll have, will be if you are an inexperienced webmaster, and don't know how to use or customise it. Rocket Worm! Earthworm Jim fan site.

Dude, don't talk about 'asinine' in relation to gamesas. The people behind present day gamesas(The Caen Brothers) are legends  in the gaming world. They are known for putting together such games as Superman 64.

But that's not all! Their track record regarding MMO-type games is very poor(Ballerium anyone?)

In addition to the above, gamesas finds itself tangled in litigation right now if this thread from those guys over at No Mutants Allowed: is correct:
http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=45705

So even if gamesas isn't counting every cent right now, The opposing lawyers certainly are.

If all this weren't enough, your comments in this thread have degenerated from mere avoidance of PhpBB to advocacy of vBulletin to the exclusion of all other alternatives(Invision Board, SMF) I had a permanent constipated grimace on my face, I was revenge personified

Tyen, if you think vbulletin is superior to phpbb, then you are smoking crack. I've used nearly every single forum software known to man, vB is crap. Phpbb is #2 in my book with Invision being #1. PhpBB, for being free, is stable, highly customizable and its plenty secure. Your entire last post gives away your lack of real knowledge and shows you're just a vB fanboy. Every forum software has vulnerablilities, including your precious vB, but I'll bet you'll find that you'd have a much harder time breaking down phpbb3 than you claim. ------------------

I don't think a simple forum is gonna make or break a company's image, pal. :|

No need, plenty of free alternatives. FluxBB looks great, but as its still under active development I'm sure gamesas would never consider it.

I think some type of measure needs to be taken, because I've seen atleast 10 posts that have yet not been deleted that are clearly made by bots. Image

perfect. i dont think anyone that happens to come by these forums is gonna be like :o or  when they see it. its not that big of a deal. i dont think gamesas should be wasting any time on getting a new forum with a few security pluses. they should be worrying about getting back on their feet. Oh really? I think Chris does a pretty good job deleting the spam.

However, if you still want a chance to monkey around with the forum software, check out this page:

I ban & delete 'em as soon as I see him. Best thing to do is ignore them.

The one thing guests can do to help is not quote their spam, as that just makes it harder to clean it up.

Chris, you should get reCAPTCHA integrated into the board, since I put it on our forum, not a single spam bot has gotten through. ------------------

I would but still being a student that would be quite a strain I think. Plus all I know is HTML, some CSS and photoshop. :P

I think CAPTCHA is a great idea, very simple and effective against bots. Image
