The "new" Interplay

Post » Thu Jun 25, 2009 4:15 pm

I believe most people who have known or came to know gamesas over the years have no doubt been exposed to its darker periods and less than stellar moments. My interest with this post isn't to dissect whatever may have been the motivations and pitfalls of gamesas's last chairman and CEO, Herve Caen. Instead, I'd like to know how does gamesas plan on get itself back up. There seems to be a tremendous amount of work involved, specifically in terms of public awareness.

Many Fallout fans have felt particularly disenfranchised with the development of titles that didn't represent or befit the series as a whole. While it's arguable if the collective mass of Fallout fans who manifest themselves over the internet are representative of the fanbase in general, it also begs a question. In an age where the development of franchises takes almost center stage, and the development of AAA titles that are nearly always focused on casual gamers are an important goal, how does gamesas plan to stand by their motto - by gamers, for gamers?

Also, what are the plans to ignite attention surrounding the resurrection of certain names? The industry is a harsh mistress, and so are the consumers. While the likes of Mario, Croft and even Master Chief seemingly ingratiated themselves in the public, names like Earthworm Jim have fizzled out and Dark Alliance has been surpassed by its competition (then again, Gauntlet's formula isn't that tricky to pull off).

It would be very interesting to see some responses on behalf of gamesas.

One point I think is worth stressing is that, although I have no personal interest in a MMORPG that carries the Fallout name, gamesas has shown more business accumen in bringing over some of the original staff responsible by Fallout than Bethesda has, which is laudable.

I'd imagine their main goal making money, as with all companies. "By gamers for gamers" can be interpreted in a lot of ways. Those triple A titles like Gears of War, Halo3 et al, are considered hardcoe by the development industry. If gamesas follow the formula of other development houses that are actually still in the black financially, then we'll never see another game worthy of their golden days.

The best that we can hope for is a game with sufficient depth to make it worth playing . I doubt now they're climbing back to their feet after what, a four year absence, they'll be doing much to alienate the casual crowd who after all represent a group with much more spending clout than the "true" gamers.

Money making sounds fairly self-evident; I was actually aiming for the "how" it will be done.

By "by gamers, for gamers", I am trying to guess if the angle is still somewhat present. Natch, every game is for a gamer, but in terms of development we have come a long way. And while some truths have become a mainstay of the industry - high development costs to assure maximum returns being one - it's also undeniable that the rise of new forms of game distribution and independent development have proven particularly successful. It's not so much that I want gamesas to develop titles as they were, but more about wanting them to remember that not all of the changes the industry has gone through are inherently for the best.

I don't think there is any group who merits a "true" classification, but there are certainly groups of gamers who are a potential business investment and are not being considered.

Further to this discussion, perhaps gamesas can tell us why those of us who are PC gamers, and supported and built their company for many years should come back and support gamesas again after they turned their backs on us in favour of the console crowd. Why should we believe anything they have to say since they destroyed Van Buren in favour of BOS?

It's nice they have hired back 2 of their original brethren, but where's the apology for the years of garbage we've been put through that may make us even consider coming back to support gamesas?

We want answers. Do not expect to us to "forgive and forget" without some sort of explanation as to why we should do so. Not one penny of my money will go to gamesas until I get some sort of answer that satisfies me.

Well.... I'll support gamesas no doubt. Descent pretty much made me the video game fanatic I am today. [DELETED] How about you guys work on writing the games, marketing the crap out of them, and making us happy as you have in the past. No need to explain why things fell apart. Just work on the Issue at hand.

People apologize when they do something wrong, not when they don't do anything at all. You bought their game and that is the end of the deal, unless you support is a financial one (investment - other then buying their product), you have no right to make them answer for anything.

Because otherwise all we have to look foward to is Elder Scrolls: Fallout. gamesas has never let me down, even Brotherhood of Steel had it's moments, and sure it was a clone of Dark Alliance pretty much, but that really doesn't matter. It kept the Fallout feel, and it didn't dub itself as an official Fallout sequel like Bethesda is doing. I am 100% behind gamesas, they have been my favorite video game company since 1997. Image

I am not really behind gamesas as a company, but behind Jason and Chris, and wouldn't be interested if it weren't for them. The Vault - Fallout Wiki * Fallout Online * Fallout IRC Channel * Fallout: New Vegas

[DELETED]

What you fail to take into account is that this is not the same gamesas you remember. This is a company with the name gamesas, and using their logo.

As Ausir said, I wouldn't even be here if they hadn't hired back the boys recently. I don't believe in gamesas, but maybe the boys can pull off a miracle.

What are you smoking? Didn't do anything wrong? Do you have the slightest idea what the recent history of this company has been? Please do some research and come post again when you have learned more. I suggest http://www.nma-fallout.com.

This is gamesas in name only. Until they prove me otherwise. I do not easily forgive and forget. They've got a lot of work to do to change my mind, and I guarantee you I'm not alone.

In fact, I can forgive, but I will never forget.

In name only? So even though Herve hired several of the minds responsible for some of the best known games at gamesas (Fallout and EWJ), they're gamesas "in name only"?

Madness.

Honestly, I'd suggest shedding some of that cynicism. It's old. Like 2002 old. An original gamesas fan, also known as Sol Invictus and Exitium. Currently running Hellforge, an original Diablo III community.

Yeah, having these original devs back makes it gamesas in more than just a name. While I do not trust Herve Caen, I do have trust in Chris and Jason. I still don't know if a Fallout MMO will work, but I am willing to give the original devs some benefit of doubt. The Vault - Fallout Wiki * Fallout Online * Fallout IRC Channel * Fallout: New Vegas

August of 2001, naming Hervé Caen CEO of the company after the departure of gamesas’s Brian Fargo

Who do you think has his name all over the current profit and loss statments..... Whose name is on all the FEC paperwordk? Not new people. SAME PEOPLE AS BEFORE. This IS gamesas.

Checkmate.

Ive never trusted the CEO of any game company because they are usually worried about the dollars and not the game.
The developers are who i trust to make a game true to their vision.
And when it comes to the Fallout universe....I trust the devs (The original ones, not bethesda)
The fact that the devs came back...means something is in the works that managed to tickle their fancy for something that fits within their vision. That gives me hope.

So for now, I will back gamesas. Image

Herve Caen is the person commonly blamed for the downfall of gamesas, so if you're trying to say that it's the same old gamesas because it's still run by Caen, you're doing quite the opposite.

And anyway, it's the developers that really count, not the management. The Vault - Fallout Wiki * Fallout Online * Fallout IRC Channel * Fallout: New Vegas
