Wasteland Wanderer Mode ALT-AFK

Post » Thu Jul 09, 2009 5:58 am

In MMO's there is inevitably be those times when people are AFK (Away From Keyboard) when thier character stops in a single location and just stands there. Doesn't move, or walk around, just stands there in one spot, although he may sit down in that spot he's in. I'm not a control freak, I'm OK if my character starts to roam around a bit, maybe look for a chair to sit in instead of the ground, maybe scrounge around through a pile of junk, or auto-looting any bodies that might be around me picking up just the money, meds, and quest items but queue-ing a list of all the other items that had been found to review when I get back to the computer (that way the corpses/loot don't disappear because you have Diahrea). When my character gets attacked and I'm AFK, he shouldn't just stand there motionless and without purpose, he should attempt to fight the oponent, and if he starts to lose he should try to run away. In a group it sometimes gets congested, there are long pauses when people are afk, and the whole group is just waiting around surfing menus and talking with the team, If everyone is AFK then your characters should have a Mingle mode where they all walk around and randomly interact with each other. The character should move around and browse while he's in a shop, if its too crowded, a line starts forming *But this has no effect on your ability to browse the menu*

Just like any afk mode, any input into the movement keys will cancel Wanderer Mode.

Sorry but that's just a horrible idea. Why play a game when you can just AFK and your character kills, loots, does everything for you.

I'm ok with walking around, rummaging and itneracting with other AFKers, but not the combat/looting thing...that's a bot, which is against all types of rules in any game. Image

So would it be a good idea minus the combat and looting? What if the character just attempted to run away, or run in circles if attacked?

That'd be better, but definitely nothing offensive. People would exploit that to extremes Image

If your AFK for a bit character should scratch butt, check wristwatch, whistle, tap foot, turn around as if to look at the player and give the "hurry up" move with the arms..., check weapons, pistols, do the "dust yourself off" move, yawn, stretch back and arms... MMO's... MMO's never change...

Would be kinda interesting to see AFK player characters begin to interact with nearby NPC's, I don't mean doing anything in particular that earns the player any reward. Just something as small as looking at the nearby NPC, walking over and asking for a light to his smoke. Or maybe pulling out a iguana on a stick and siting down near the fire to eat the thing while waiting for the player to control him/her again. It doesn't have to have tons of sound bites or any at all, just something better then.

Stand still
Sit down
Scratch butt
look left
look right
Stand up
Scratch...

It's probably past the scope of the game at the moment since their probably feverishly working on making content and not 'ambiance'.

I hope they pull it off, we need a good sci-fi MMO over the 4 others we have now and the 4,000 Sword and sorcery's we have out already...

God speed gamesas, show em how it's done!

And when you are logging out he is going to a saloon and spend your money to a drinks, drugs and sluts. Excuse my bad English... I am a Russian bear, it's hard to type with claws.

Agree with this. Im ok with the walking around, seeking out the pub if im in a hub, maybe escaping from battles if attacked. But other then that would just be a waste.

the afk emotes remind me of red dead . Like in games lobbys before team death match ect .Your guy or woman stand around smoking drinking and other stuff hell one dude was playing a violin lol not sure i spelt that correctly. but maybe you can choose which one you want him or her to do . eg smoke . eat . drink , dance ect just some cool little things whilst waiting for others to come back

Call me a perv, but when I read about 'interacting with other afkers' I just imagined a player coming back from kitchen with his coffee and sandwich and sees his character actively making kids with some other female character afk. :o Fallout? What Fallout? (Live in Russia Dem.jpg

that would be hilarious or for the females coming back to seeing your character being defiled. either way hehe. i do like the idea of miner afk "bot" to keep your character doing something other than stand there. i do also agree that no and i mean no reward should be gained from this what so ever. well maybe make an afk achievement that mite be ok.

Yeah, this will greatly help china farmers with their "project infestation" on Fallout mmo, rofl.

(Its just one of MANY exploits, that going to ruin fallout completely,if "mode alt-afk" goes live)

maybe i'm missing the point of this but if your AFK what do you care what your character is doing obviously if you are afk you made the choice that what you need to do irl is more important at the time if your not controlling your avatar then thats your problem i dont see why the character should fend for itself. if you have to be afk and dont want to get killed you should probably log out Is there anything you cant do?

Good idea to have your character go into an 'IDLE' mode while AFK. Prevents you from having to start something LONG over again from the beginning because you had to warp back to town. But it should cause the game to ignore him as well. In other words, no spawns, PvP, pickpocketing by others or anything that would otherwise give you or other players 'freebies'.

Maybe a 'Set Camp' option instead that puts him in a 'sleeping' mode while AFK. You can rest but don't come out of the rest state til u return and click OK. If you see Metal Maniac, let him know I'm looking for 'em.

I think that an issue that is trying to be addressed is that AFK players (there will be people in AFK) start to ruin the atmosphere of the game if they just stand there like mannequins. So if at the very least they seek out other AFK players or NPCs to have psuedo conversations, they won't detract from the fantasy experience.

Firstly I hope Chris and his whimsical buddies will understand the importance of having a seperate server for Chinese people. That is not racist, and it keeps out the spammers, advertisers, bots, farmers, etc. EDIT Plus, I'm no good with servers and such, but it will help stop lag. I think. Cross-country connections do cause a bit of the facedesk syndrome.

Secondly, it would be a good idea to go AFK and just have your char do stuff. Maybe like... clean his gun / sledgehammer? A female spawns from the side, stands infront of him looking for stuff, and your character does a thrust behind her, and she walks off, unaware of the sixiness Mr. Wastelander just did?

Of course, this wouldn't effect gameplay, it'd just give us lols. I'd sit there and wait for an AFK emotion, just to see it. You are being served by Nymus powered by black boyshorts with black lace, a pink bow, and pink ribbon and a hot pink and black lace, totally frilly.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

What?

I kind of understand what you're saying here, but there are just so many things wrong with it that I don't even know where to start. Suffice to say that racially segregating servers isn't going to have any effect on real money for virtual currency trading. Maybe you'll sit and sigh, wishing that I were near
Then maybe you'll ask me to come back again
And maybe I'll say "Maybe"

The proposed 'AFK mode' wouldn't be exploitable by a BOT if done right. If you see Metal Maniac, let him know I'm looking for 'em.
