Paying for Extras

Post » Fri Jul 10, 2009 10:16 am

I was wondering if gamesas might consider allowing subscribers to pay for extra things.

I am not talking about powerful equipment or special abilities. More like cool looking equipment, a Fallout location that you have named, naming any computer (NPC) characters, importing your own image for avatar and such.

I think that some of us diehard fans would be willing to pay for something like that.

It could be a way to generate a small additional income for gamesas.

Possibly you could buy more choices to start from. Ie there are the set X number of entry points to come into the game at, but if you pay $10 a month more you get an additional Y number of entry points. Or maybe a one time extra fee.

You don’t like losing all your equipment upon death, then pay $10 a month and upon your defeat/death you will return to the game with the equipment you on you at the time. (Any unique only game items will be gone though).

You don’t like a PvP game, pay $25 a month and not only will you be safe from being Player killed, you can’t kill any player your self. (of course that stops you from gaining some items and completing some quests.)

I honestly don’t know if this if truly feasible or if it just create endless headaches for gamesas. I just thought I would suggest it and then sit back and listen to the babble of voices.

mm nice idea with extra stuff, mmm Blizzard was making some like that already - extra game edition pack for 1 time payment price (new closes/dress for char, pet and mounts). Its will be great if gamesas will adds some special content for FALLOUT fans. Image

I guess is quite enough to pay for the game and for monthly subscription in my humble opinion.

Cool looking novelty equipment, yes.
Paying money to get 'special privileges, absolutely not. Ever.

Dunno if that constitutes a babble, but yeah.

I'm all for the micropayment option for this sort of thing, but I agree that it should only be for things that do not give a tactical advantage. Clothes, hairstyles, cool looks on weapons, char slots, char renames, that sort of thing. But the second we start paying $$ for special items that give us an advantage, I'm out. :ugeek:

I'm sorry; I'm as die-hard as they come, but if gamesas decides on RMT, item-shops, or any other form of nickle-and-diming the customer, I'm out. I can't support this type of greed when it comes to MMOs. Box retail and sub-fees are enough. Leave it at that. Please. -- it’s an obsession. Not a cologne, either. Some think that the way it changes a person’s life is tragic, but they just don’t understand. - Wooz

I wouldn't go so far as to call it greed, it's just business. Any decision that gamesas makes on the subject will no doubt take into consideration the amount of ire that it would generate amongst their fans. A lot of people have a knee-jerk aversion to microtransactions, because they've been used in the past to bleed customers dry. That said, there are definitely MMOs that use them to their advantage. As I see it, there are three major styles of microtransaction.

1) Pay cash, get cosmetic / convenience benefits. It might be a title, an avatar, a non-combat pet, a custom version of a weapon with a unique name (eg "Mex's Mega Mallet", which has the exact stats as a regular super sledge), or whatever. The list is near endless. These confer absolutely no in-game advantage beyond their ability to bedazzle your opponents.

2) Pay for content, but the game has no subscription fees. DDO pioneered this model a while back, I think, and it's worked quite well for them as far as I know. The game is free to download and play, but once you get past level 4, you really need to start buying the extra content to get the full experience. This model is fundamentally no different to a free trial and a monthly subscription, but on the surface, it seems to irk some players.

3) Full on power-selling. Buy gold / caps / bucks, buy power boosts, etc. This is often accompanied by opt-out subscription (pseudo-)scams, heavy use of (often misleading) advertising, and other insidious tactics. To date, I'm not sure if this has actually made it into a mainstream client-based MMO game.

I think either 1 or 2 could work, and both have definite advantages and disadvantages. I don't think anybody at gamesas would be crazy enough to try number 3. Maybe you'll sit and sigh, wishing that I were near
Then maybe you'll ask me to come back again
And maybe I'll say "Maybe"

Take another look at DDO's item shop and tell me that's not a full-on power-selling MT business model. +5 full plate for sale? Loot boost potions? -- it’s an obsession. Not a cologne, either. Some think that the way it changes a person’s life is tragic, but they just don’t understand. - Wooz

Yes, but DDO has no subscription, and provides other avenues to aquire that gear. Some of the features are compulsory in order to be competitive, and that's okay because that's how Turbine makes their bread. As long as the compulsory stuff works out to be roughly equivalent to a monthly subscription, then it's really not a huge issue. If other players want to skip a bunch of content by forking out dollars, well that's their business.

I mean, look at a traditional MMO's monthly subscription. You can't get any loot at all without paying it. You have to pay $20/month or whatever JUST for the opportunity to get some loot. That doesn't really sound fair, yet millions of people do it. Fundamentally I don't reallllly see any difference between that, and having to buy a new set of armour or weapon enchant every 3 months for $50 or whatever.

edit - to clarify. For me the line is defined by min/maxing. Take the minimum amount of money necessary to make the most powerful character possible (within reason, ie not paying $15 for a 0.03% boost), and compare that to a subscription method. If they're comparable, then I think it's fine. If extra money allows people to get that min/maxed character faster, or even instantly, well I'm okay with that too, as long as I can be 100% competitive paying the minimum. Maybe you'll sit and sigh, wishing that I were near
Then maybe you'll ask me to come back again
And maybe I'll say "Maybe"

I agree, for novelty items yes but not for overpowered equipment.
But in all aspect i say its better to avoid paying for extras, with the subscription fees and game purchase itself ..

The game + any monthly fees are enough for me.

A big no for micropayments, make the cool stuff available for somehow distinguished players (big playerkillers an option to be raider, for instance, or big tarders an opportunity to become a caravan driver, or just a tattoo for an active faction supporter, and of course some very unique items available on very unique opportunities)

I'm totally with you.

It seems though that this is the way MMOs are going. The rumours are that The Old Republic will use a lot of "micro-transactions" and I believe someone from Blizzard was talking about making WoW "free-to-play" which translates to no monthly fee but you will pay for pretty much everything else you want to do.

Please No.

No micro-transactions. We don't want an item based world.

I don't like micro-transactions honestly. Unless they let you change your name, race, class, server, ect.
