Passable characters.

Post » Wed Jul 15, 2009 11:32 am

So, the search gives nothing about this aspect. What do you think, should be characters passable (you can run through another character like in WoW, PW, AO, LoTRO, etc.) or impassable (you can't run through another character like in UO, AoC, WHO, LA2, D&DO, etc.)? Excuse my bad English... I am a Russian bear, it's hard to type with claws.

It depends, I would actually like to have unpassable characters. Usually you have passable to make combat smooth and so people wont get stuck in crowds, but since this is a wasteland I don't think there will be gigantic crowds (mostly thinking of bazaars) like in many other games. They should however be pushable :P so no one can block on purpose.

I think it would add a lot to the general feeling of the game, don't like it when people are clipping through each other. Image

It's called "clipping." It generally doesn't work in an MMO for one reason: blocking.

More recently, final fantasy tried a slight stop each time you ran through another player but made it so you can still go through.

If they ever tried to do a unpassable block they would kinda have to change how a lot of things work such as the "Main Town" concept you see in most mmo's as well as quest hubbing. (for starters if they really wanted to do that they would have to do plenty of other things.)

But most likely I cant see them doing that.

Clipping has always annoyed me in most games and if at all possible in an online game id prefer it didn't happen, perhaps a mechanic in the style of Assassins Creed, where with a push of a button your character does an animation of gently shoving someone out of the way.

Collision detection of this sort can be good for combat (and PvP) but can be bad when in a peaceful area and folk block access to doors and such. Hopefully its implementation is on an 'as needed' basis. Image

It is called "collisions". "Clipping" is a graphical terminology, it means a calculations for viewport borders determination.
Sorry for ugly phrase, it's hard to explain such a complex notion with my level of English. Excuse my bad English... I am a Russian bear, it's hard to type with claws.

Easy :D just make so that if you hold in shift while walking you make a gentle push, hold in... iunno.. another button you make a hard shove ^^ but perhaps you might draw attention to you >_> Image

Go! Shove action! *Alarm goes off* Shoo :/

But yeah, shove seems the most realistic/cool choice. Image

WAR has a really good way to deal with it. In combat, characters are solid, but outside of combat you can pass right through them.

Agreed. I think blocking adds enjoyable realism so long as the collisions physics are in line with character models (e.g. No game engine preventing movement through a visible/graphical gap.)

I think "blocking" sounds great. Crowds aren't easy to move through, and inadvertedly blocking people's access should get a stern reaction you'd expect in a largely lawless wasteland. Why do games studios have to fight and die? War, war never changes : (

Characters should be solid all the time as combat should be potentially imminent at all times.

Make it so that if you are in combat you are impassable while out of combat you are passable. that would solve most issues.
