Combat system: NOT LIKE THIS PLEASE!!!

Post » Tue Jul 21, 2009 2:59 am

There are videos of Earthrise ENGINE:

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/331/view/videos

This is no laughing matter - please do NOT NOT NOT try to have such excruciating BAD combat system by claiming it is "RPG" style!

If these are the "limitations" of the Earthrise engine - then BREAK THOSE LIMITATIONS!

This is your last chance! Failure is NOT an option this time - we dont want a fledgling/bleeding MMO right from the start - we want something SOLID/FAST and FUN right from start that blows thier socks off instead! Image

You shouldn't speak bad off other companies/games, threads have a high chance of being locked cause of that. Especially since you are bashing the company that gamesas is co-working with...

Give good criticism instead of just yelling and writing how bad something is.

Still, I believe gamesas can make a good game. Image

Constructiveness coming up mister. Replace the "rpg style" with a true shooter/fighting game system (tl;dr, more like FPS gameplay). S.P.E.C.I.A.L stills counts for something in combat (not so much intelligence and to a lesser extent luck), but reduce skills to things like reload time/precision or how stable the grip on the weapon is (how come every vault baby can reload a gun under fire like seasoned soldier???) and leave accuracy mostly to the skills of the player (as opposed to the character) and damage mostly to the physics/physiology (in 3d world a bullet to the braincase is a bullet to the braincase, damnit.) Trying to avoid comparisions here but I think S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and S.P.E.C.I.A.L combined would be pretty awesome, maybe (overuse of full stops not withstanding)

Also worth considering I think, is a bit of decoupling in thinking between melee and projectile combat. Yes, the transitions still have to be seamless. Difficult yes, but also a chance to do something great. Why do games studios have to fight and die? War, war never changes : (

Personally, I'd just play Earthrise to explore all those wide-open landscapes, and then run in a building and kill everyone with the "psionics" I heard them talk about. PSYBEAM! That game just now left alpha stage, I'm sure that the UI will be polished, Combat and movement sprites will be added, and the combat itself will be smoother. I personally hope that FOOL will be it's own game, but only because I hate playing the same thing over and over again. Unless Earthrise really does end up being crap, then I'll have more reasons to want this game to be different. I put the 'Skill' in 'Kill.'
Wait, what?

SINCE gamesas is co-working with the company that makes Earthrise (and is most likely using the same engine), that *IS* the reason why this thread was created!!

It is better to dissuade NOW, than after launch! No serious MMO player can claim Earthrise combat is unique and fun. (Fire a bullet.... wait for cooldown.... fire a bullet..... cooldown.... toss grenade.... et al.) Disguising MUD code conventions under a glossy interface maketh a MMO not. Calling it "RPG" also doesn't make it OK. Bad = bad.

Lock the post if you must - but this HAD to be bought to attention. I'd prefer they read it and then censor it, rather than never have had mentioned it at all - and then end up with a poor combat concept - only because no one mentioned it. Image

God forbid, a game where you could only fire a round or two and then had to wait to do so again... nevermind that in FO1+2 you had to wait for all the npcs to make thier move before you could fire again, they were turnbased.

But seriously, you're overreacting. Yes, FOOL is going to use the Earthrise engine, but i'm sure the engine can be tweaked 101+ different ways. Besides, right now Earthrise is just in early beta, and games tend to change a lot during the beta.

Seriously, chill, gamesas has good guys working on the team no need to yell. Approach calmy, people tend to listen when people are not barkin' in their faces. Image

nooooo, please not a FPS-shooter style combat :(
Not everyone has the reaction times or co-ordination to play those effectively. I gave up playing that other Apocalypse-MMO/FPS hybrid because of the awful targetting system.
I like playing a character that can improve over time, and improve on things I can't do, not be limited by my cack-handed mouse-skills.

And where's the ideea in this thread?
All looks kind of funny, really!
Sorry for offtopic, but if this is a "not this" where is the "like this"? :D
Also, searching the forum will be a good ideea; think there are a few threads regarding this matter in a constructive way.

Regards!

I'm probably below the average for game shooting skills. I think it also lends to an aspect of diplomacy and non-combat completion of goals, simply because there has to more than shooting someone as a solution to problems. Maybe I'm missing the point of gaming escapism here, but if everyone can all be equally awesome by pressing a few buttons in some full time vats and minmaxing their character, than imo no one is awesome. Why do games studios have to fight and die? War, war never changes : (

Well, in FO1+2 you could go through the entire game and never fire a shot or toss a punch (Frank Horrigan in FO2 might be the only acception). It wasn't particularly easy, and you couldn't complete the combat quests but most could be beaten using speech, science, or another none-combat skill. There were also enough quests that you could only complete using non-combat skills that it didn't really matter that you didn't want to fight every battle. Hopefully, they do something like this with FOOL, and make it so that the rewards are unique, and particularly benefitial to player factions.

Which one is that? No seriously, you'll have to narrow it down. I put the 'Skill' in 'Kill.'
Wait, what?

Would be extremely cool if you could do the classical fallout style of approach to most encounters like mentioned above here yeah. When i play fallout i find i take every oppurtunity i get to actually avoid combat simply bequase its fun to see what happenes.

Another mmo has a way of going about this where they have a peacefull class that solves encounters with minigames. Kinda like lockpicking and hacking. Looks fun, but i dunno if it should be exclusive to a specific class. If they stay true to the skillsystem and dont develop a class system then i will most defenetly take speech and lockpick like i always do :D

Joo haz a point.

I agree, i think there should be different modes that allow people to flex their abilities, but make it so anyone can win. Thats probably going to be hard for gamesas, but it would make alot of people happy.
Like maybe an FPS mode while playing against someone who set their mode too a more of fallout tactics view. That would really make thing intresting. Image

The only thing I would like to avoid is the ability to fire a gun at someone's head, and their head FALLS OFF

-Pharl Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!

Well, i don't think we'll see several different approaches to combat, it would be nearly impossible to balance. The exception, though, would be the differences in how big guns, small guns/energy weapons, melee, and thrown weapons are approached. They could probably have FPS style gameplay for small guns and energy weapons, with more of a TPS style for big guns, and melee+thrown weapons could be more of your classic mmo select target, press button combat.

I agree with the earthrise combat system looking pretty horrible. Targeting takes so many fun aspects out of the game such as dodging, jumping and any player skill whatsoever. People that can't aim well would be advised to take melee or have high charisma/speech so they can avoid or engage enemies without aiming being such a factor. I don't see how a VATS system could ever be implemented in a real time pvp or pvp environment unless you are in a solo instance. Maybe they could make vats a mini game requiring certain key combinations. Please though, do not kill the excitement with a targeting system. A good FPS MMORPG is going to be the next big thing. I love the Fallout series and I hope gamesas does this right.

Please for the love of the Master do not make this anything like F3/NV in terms of combat. Stick with what made the originals so appealing...
