Why this game will be amazing

Post » Wed Jul 22, 2009 9:22 pm

I'm tired of seeing the "While this game will svck" thread on the front page. Do we have to be so negative? Let's bump it off the front page.

I think Fallout Online is going to be one of the best games to come out in..eh..whatever year it comes out in. Here's a few reasons I think it's going to be great:

The wastes, giant radscorpions, customizable characters, sneaking around, finding stuff in strange places, unique quests, factions, rats, robots, mutants, knives, rifles, hand guns, grenades, pip boy, this game is going to be amazing.

Unilateral excitement can be just as harmful as unilateral pesimism ^^

That being said, i'm looking forward to FOOL, as it sounds like they have a plan in mind that distinguishes it somewhat from other MMO's. The more the better, however.

It's Fallout - keep the atmosphere and they've got a seller :D

The atmosphere is of course key, however I feel they are leaning towards game play mechanics that may not lend to the atmosphere the way they should.

It's very good to be optimistic, just don't set yourself up with expectations because than you'll undoubtably get your hopes up.

I see Fallout Online as being one of the best MMOs. Even if it isn't technically better, it has one characteristic that sets it above all others. It's a Fallout game! :D

This opinion is coming from a guy who liked ALL the Fallout games. That's right, even Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. I won't argue that that was the worst Fallout, however despite it being an arcade abberation it was still fun and the only Fallout (up until Project V13) to have cooperative multiplayer.

I'm a big fan of the theme/style and background lore/story (including all the tech, culture, concepts, etc) of the Fallout universe. From what I've seen so far that the V13 team has shared, I'm quite confident that this game will have a plethora of it. And I really hope they go into good detail. About NPCs' lives, about the technical aspects of equipment (machines, weapons, etc), all that good stuff. That information and imagination is what'll make this game great. Image

Gosh, I'll try to be more careful in the future about not getting excited. I wouldn't want to harm anyone.

Damn right, just imagine you being so excited you start to wave with your arms BUT you became so excited when you where in the kitchen... HOLDING A KNIFE! and there are lots of people around you!

Being excited is dangerous! Image

i really just want to sit off in the distance and launch a guided missile at someone. Of course as it flies i have the option of controling it via a first person view right into their chest to watch them explode.

Minefields would be nice.

Of course! About 99% of the members on this board are looking foreward to FOOL, I'd wager. I certainly am.

Now, I'm seeing a lot of talk around these forums, and anywhere FOOL is discussed, and a couple comments in this very thread, saying that FOOL will be good if they get the "atmosphere." As much as I love the Fallout atmosphere (of the original games that is,) wouldn't you say that Fallen Earth pretty much nailed the Fallout aesthetic? It's not a better game for looking cool and moody. For FOOL to succeed, it has to offer something that no other MMORPG is offering.

By the way, I tend to define success by how much I enjoy a game. World of Warcraft is miserably unsuccessful.

We're not supposed to discuss other games here but I'll say this: FE is nothing like Fallout or F2. There's no real sense of danger, humor is absent, recourses are more or less everywhere, and I constantly felt like I was a poor garbage rummaging sheriff in a twisted future western movie. That one CSR that constantly spammed notices with a western accent didn't help one bit. Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 64bit

God I can't wait to load up FOOL (day 1 of 7 days off of work). Sit back in my over sized man-chair with my 64oz Mountain Dew mug filled to the brim with ice and Vault (both of the 2 liters sitting to the side so I don't have to get out of my chair for refills.)

I set aside the trinkets and extras book from the Collectors Edition that I was reading as I waited for the install to finish. I load up the game, sign-in to my account (which was already set up from beta), turn up the speakers (yeah...Ive already plugged the wireless mouse and keyboard in so that I could plug my rig into the big screen and surround sound), cut the lights (or get the wife to do it, cause I'm already chilled out in my man-chair) and close my eyes as Ron Perlman's voice fills the living room.

"War......War never changes."

(Closely followed by me dieing a very very happy man from the pure ecstasy I'm experiencing from gamesas's Fallout Online : Collector's Edition)

PS. Don't worry gamesas, the Last Will and Testament will leave my wife explicit instructions NOT to take any legal action against your company for my untimely (yet every so satisfying) demise.

I'm cautiously optimistic! What a terribly British thing to say, eh??

My interest comes from knowing past Fallout games; 1, 2, and even Tactics. There are so many games out there set in a post apocalypse that are grim, depressing, and nothing more. No character. No soul. No personality. It's depressing, what's even the point of playing them? If I want to be melancholy, I can think of better ways to do it. The difference with Fallout though was that it was an apocalypse full of silly and black humour. It was quite light-hearted, ad it wasn't afraid to be terribly eccentric. Moreover, it wasn't afraid to be strange either, I still love that the doombeasts of Fallout 1 becoming the friendlies of Fallout 2 broke so many inflexible minds. All of this is why I love Fallout.

If I wanted to play a dreary old bloody post-apocalypse, there are lots of games I could play for that. I want to play Fallout for its character, for its charm, for its unashamed verve, that crazed glint in the collective eye of those making it, who'd throw caution to the wind just to do things that are unexpected, and just plain weird. I like that. These days, I miss that. Call me an old fart, but why's everything so serious these days? Even stuff that tries to be funny takes itself too seriously in doing so, all too often, having far too big of an opinion of itself. The reason I like Fallout is for being the opposite of that. It's not even afraid to laugh at itself a little. I remember all the puns, the set pieces like the Bridge of Death, the Hubologists, the crazed people, animals (feral brahmin!), and robots. It was entertaining.

Fallout made me laugh, it made me smile, too.

There are little hints of things in what they've shown us that give me hope that this sense of character, this individuality that gives their wasteland so much life, is present. The Church of Harold, for example. After getting a good chuckle out of me, I just grinned like a fool at that. I mean, the logo for it... have you seen it? It's perfect. It's typical Fallout. It's everything that was missing from Fallout 3 and even New Vegas in my opinion. Honestly Internet, people, Humanity... why are we so bleeding serious?

I want more of that. If they can continue to be eccentric and crazy, if they can make me laugh and smile like that did, and like the previous Fallout games did, then it's a win for me. If a game has character then I can plow through even the worst gameplay to enjoy it. This game may be awesome because the soul of Fallout may be there. So I'm cautiously optimistic, and I'll become more so the more they show me things that are off the wall, the more they show me the black humour that made past Fallouts so lovable.

But that single image with the Church of Harold gives me hope that that they've got the right people at the helm. For a game like this, you need to be able to take a wasteland and turn it into a thing of wonder.

They just might be able to do it. Maybe.

Cautiously optimistic.
