I've read quite a few of these myself, and there are quite a few concepts from those books that gamesas could/should incorporate. You have a group of people with a wide array of background and skills; Armorer, leader, Doctor, Psychic, Mutie, and stealthy melee master, and a mix of everything in between.
Certain mutated creatures are found all over North America with regional abilities ( The stickies ), You have physically mutated creatures, or psychic "Doomies".
Most importantly, the same small isolated faction isn't found across the entire wasteland. The whole premiss of Fallout is that; When the Nukes fell, the surviving groups were isolated with relatively small gene pools, and yet after playing New Vegas there is a feeling that the world is largely homogenus.
