Interplay have rights to play the oldies?

Was just wondering, does gamesas have the rights to play any old tunes for FOOL? Pretty essential to Fallout to have that, if you ask me.

So, I guess a little community discussion, any suggestion for FOOL's 'theme song'? Here's what's been done so far:

"Maybe" by The Ink Spots, for Fallout 1.
"A kiss to build a dream on" as sung by Louis Armstrong for Fallout 2.
"I don't want to set the world on fire" by The Ink Spots, for Fallout 3.

I think they should be able to use anything from the old games. When it come to music from the new games, hmm I'm not sure, they didn't make the songs they play so maybe. Image

The song they used for the teaser now on the official site is in the public domain. Even if they don't buy any licensed music, there's plenty of old music for which the rights have already expired. The Vault - Fallout Wiki * Fallout Online * Fallout IRC Channel * Fallout: New Vegas

To me, all the songs from that era kind of sound the same anyway. Unless there's a song someone has their heart set on for some reason, there's no reason not to save money and use music that isn't copyrighted.

I read somewhere (I forget) that "Maybe" was used for Fallout 1 because they couldn't get or couldn't afford the rights to some other track (possibly "I don't want to set the world on fire"). In retrospect, I think "Maybe" was a much better choice. Putting a song called "I don't want to set the world on fire" into a game about setting the world on fire seems too obvious. It's mere post-modern cleverness that isn't very clever to begin with.

Maybe (pardon the pun) I'm anolyzing this too deeply, but the reason "Maybe" was such a beautiful choice is for the songs naivete. It's a sweet song about love that knows nothing of atomic bombs or post-apocalyptic worlds. The song continues to play after the bomb, frozen in time in a world that will never again exist and those listening think back to that time. Whether intentional or not, the use of that track in Fallout 1 elevates the game to being art.

If you've made it this far into my comment, then I thank you for reading my American Psycho-esque rant about Fallout game music.

Ok, nice American psycho rant there, but what other songs are artistic? I really don't know music of that era well enough to say anything, so I can't comment, but you need more than one song. All I want for Christmas is APA and a gauss rifle.

I like the idea of FO *I refuse to call the game FOOL* having oldies.
Songs for artist like
Chuck Berry
Elvis
Little Richard
Fats Domino
Johnny Cash
Buddy Holly
the big 50's and early 60's stars
