Name is Joe and I am a 28 year old from New York. I have grown up playing many of your games, I even used to draw Earthworm Jim pictures when i was 13. But when all is said and done, i am not a fanatic, or a fanboy. I am just a normal average person who loves gaming and here is my opinion on this whole Project 13 stuff.
Like alot of others, i eagerly waited for the release of Fallout 3 (Van Buren) in the 90's. I was extremely disappointed when it was cancelled. And even felt sorry for your dev team. For the sake of arguement, i stopped following Fallout news when the project was canceled, and i did not start taking interest again until some years later (2006) when a Fallout 3 was rumored to be released by Bethesda. I was excited, like others, because Bethesda is well known for their RPG games (Elder scrolls). So i again felt like i did when I was 16 playing Fallout 1, i could not WAIT for the release of Fallout 3 in 2008.
But during my waiting for the game, i decided to do some web searching. I instantly learned that gamesas/Black Isle completely sold their rights to Bethesda. Wow, so I assumed that gamesas had fallen on tough times. The creator of one of my favorite childhood games (Earthworm Jim) has gone bankrupt, whatever.
But heres where my problem starts. If financial trouble kept you from making Van Buren. Why on earth would you sell the rights to Bethesda (So they could theoretically create an easier game to craft) just to use those millions of dollars in funds trying to create a MMORPG? Now ok, maybe im not a video game designer. But im %100 certain the creation of an MMORPG compared to a Fallout 1,2 sequel is EXTREMELY different in cost, man hours, resource, and maintenance.
What it seems like to an honest Joe like myself. Is that whoever is making decisions for gamesas, is making them very poorly. Selling your IP may have been a great move for the fans of the franchise, but it was a horrible business decision if you are relying on banking with a MMORPG. I just do not understand the logic, and I do not even have a college education. Why would somebody that failed to finish a difficult project, attempt to create an IMPOSSIBLE project, after selling %99 of the patenting rights to their artwork?????? Really?
You gentlemen have created an epic franchise. A franchise that lives on in alot of us. A world you created that we will take to our graves. But lets face it men, Bethesda has brought the Fallout world on to the grand stage. The only thing missing from the modern Fallouts, is the turn based combat. Everything Bethesda has done with the games never watered down any of the content. Their kept true to their word, and created an immersive, fun, awe inspiring game that most of us sat and played LONGER then Fallout 1 and 2 combined! Heck, even Fallout: New Vegas enlisted the help of previous Black Isle members. And New Vegas is worth all the hype. They did NOT ruin your creation.
In conclusion, it just seems to me that you (gamesas) are trying to break the hearts of gamers once again. With a promise of something. Something SO BIG, that it would most likely take gamesas, Obsidian, and Bethesda COMBINED to finish this project. An MMORPG is no joke men. Really consider your options.
Just let Bethesda do their job. They own the game now. And they are doing a fine job, by all standards. Please do not bite your nose to spite your face. If your attempting to create an MMORPG just to ruin Bethesda's chances at making one, just stop. Your not hurting anyone except the people who fell in love with the world you guys created. You got 50+ million in US dollars for the sale. Their is no shame in letting the students become the master. And gamesas has indeed taught Bethesda how to make a great game.
