Would you like world-wide events in Fallout Online?

Post » Sat Aug 01, 2009 2:47 pm

I'm curious how people would feel about game-wide events in Fallout Online. For example, on a random Wednesday, the entire game world experiences a wind storm that causes all players to take damage while in the open. Or raiders raid cities, killing everyone they see for an entire day. Would this sort of instability in the game world frustrate you and make you lose interest in the game or would it make you more interested in playing? :geek:

Small story lines that have things happening in certain places at certain times (slavers moving through an area looking for escaped slaves, etc.) where players can interact in certain ways would be potentially interesting and fun. Random crap would just be cheesy and tiresome.

I'd like there to be world events like raider attacks on settlements, storms in the desert (maybe not making you lose hp but rather making your map useless so you cant navigate and like 0 visual :P), gang wars in non-law restricted towns (like New Reno for example). I would think stuff like that would be cool, just don't overuse them :P should be a bit special ^^ Image

World events should be varied, unique, and advance the storyline. They also would have to be different for every faction in my opinion. For example, one faction is raiding another so that determines how the event affects you.

"Would this sort of instability in the game world frustrate you and make you lose interest in the game or would it make you more interested in playing?" It frustrates some people, but I don't understand why. It makes the game more interesting.

World wide, I would find having the same condition happening world wide a bit much and slightly annoy.

Unless it was on bomb day. You know the actual day that the bombs dropped.

That would make for an interesting limited play MMO.

Everyone makes and plays a character for the time before the bombs (war). You play business men, construction workers, teachers, etc. Then one day the bombs drop. You are one of the surviors of the bombs and now you must survive your fellow mankind. Good luck.

No Vault people, no mutants, or aliens. Just 3-5 years of actually trying to survive.

Possibly daily random radiation storms, radiation dust storms, trying to find food (or avoid becoming food).

If those were the conditions, then I would not mind as much the (magically produced) entire game world (MMO) suffering realistic conditions.

;)

I think that they should share the news in the game, you know like you are in a town and in the center of the town there is a guy screaming that there will be a big desert storm coming in X days, or that raiders are attacking some nearby villages.

Instead of showing the news on forum, then the ones who are dedicated to the game and play it will know about all these things :D Image

Having seen different types of events in a couple of MMO's I have to say this sort of thing needs to be implemented with real flair. In Warhammer Online (WAR) you have events, often tied to weekends or hollidays. Usually the events end up consuming most of the player base and most of its time. In WAR, events almost cancel out the every day gaming experience, or at least alter it, or the motivation for it. But on occasion these events can make some areas really active, the PvP really fun etc.

If you manage to make events of some type that, e.g unlocks a new Vault (in the spirit of dungeons/instanced play in other MMO's) that you can enter with a full group (what's a FG in Fallout, 5-6 people?) that adds a new area and new content for a limited time you might be able to add a lot of fun for the players. On the other hand, I don't like events that just makes you chase a white whale in the form of a silly hat or a silly item that make an annoying sound when you (and everyone else) use it.

As to having you go blind from a sand storm, maybe that would end up on the annoying part of the scale. But in general, I'd love for things like wind direction impacting spreading of radiation, acid rain falling in some areas, raiding from NPC's on certain "quest hubs" and the likes. Hell, I'd love for actual game changing events, if they can be implemented with real care to details; having a certain city (and faction) take over new land, build new houses and such. What would trigger that though? Maybe lots of players doing loads of questing for the Brotherhood of Steel can make them powerful enough to take over a part of a Raider city etc?

Player actions ingame having impact on the game is a great idea, but this brings with it a lot of balance issues. I think it all boils down to what kind player base you have, what they are prepared to endure or partake in etc. You can't, as a developer, force people to grind standing/goodwill with a faction just to be able to buy plasma rifles without getting a part of the player base set against you. So the question is if you can get people into participate in events that they feel forced to attend, either because their friends or foes do, or because the rewards are to great to pass up?

Having limited but smart and fun content that is a part of a temporary event is great. Give me a temporary access to a new PvP area or even small things like a sudden and temporary overflow of Nuka-Cola because some scavenger found a overturned Nuka-Cola truck recently. If it adds to most players game experience I'm all for it!

I don't know how i'd feel about it, i guess it would depend on the size of the game world and how it was implimented.

For example, if the game covers the entire continental U.S. and much of canada, most 'global' events wouldn't be believable.

However, i would like to see player driven events of a 'global' nature. For example, if a player faction with negative karma becomes strong to the point of imbalance than all of the player factions with possitive karma, and maybe even some with neutral would automatically be hostile to them and could even recieve player faction missions.

I don't think global events would be anymore unbelievable than fast travel and fast travel would make a global events possible

having stuff happen in the world would be a good thing. Would give some unpredictability to the world and this is a good thing. MMO's... MMO's never change...

I think this would be a great idea for the game. It adds a form of reality to the game and makes it seem more like an interactive role. The raiders thing: however, could get a tad bit annoying for new players and could discourage players from playing. Adding real time weather would be great and adding a personality to the tribes and people based on different days would give this game great playback value. The only thing is that it needs to be tailored to both new and experienced players and should not favor one to much. This makes for a great game all around and is something that can easily be added through patches to add even more content seamlessly to the game.

How about capturing territory? I know its been done before but in this game that could give it a interesting twist.Like for instance one faction possesses a water purification facility that reduces the cost of fresh water in the immediate territory and another faction decides to capture it. There could be things like functioning ammo plants and mines or maybe factories that all give unique bonuses that can be captured and fortified.

Or make them give a ration to the members of the respective faction that holds the facility that are in the area.So they get like X amount of fresh water or ammo, or whatever. It would make defending the facilities a higher priority. It would also make capturing the more valuable facilities much more difficult and a higher priority.

Yes I would greatly appreciate this feature because it would add realism though I would like an advance warning system for example one faction could control a weather station so they would know what is happening while a faction friendly with slavers would know when they strike.
