Health, stamina, etc. bars on other players

Post » Tue Aug 04, 2009 11:14 pm

I'm just curious if there has been any indication of what level of detail will be available to players concerning other players' health, stamina, and so such.

I personally would prefer if players could only see bars for these things on faction/guild/party mates, and not on random people, especially not on enemies. This would make PvP far more interesting.

IMO, ony if you take the Awareness perk should there be any floating bars around.

I understand the desire to know but I don't want to know.

Well, if they stick with the design in FO1/2 they could have a floating bar over thier head to indicate thier health status in colors, from green for healthy to red for almost dead. Considering in FO1/2 you always had an idea of how much health someone had. After taking the awareness perk you could have an actual bar to indicate thier health, giving a much better idea of where someones at. Of course, there should be other applications to the perk as well, but at least in regards to health this would keep it in line with what we saw in FO1/2.

I think the awareness perk should only apply to other players if players can take a perk to counter this, so aware players cannot see their health, etc.

Noooo, just taking the awareness perk is a loss in itself, while you may take the awareness perk to gain sight of other people's exact hp, they may take a skill that makes them much better in combat perhaps. The awareness perk can sure make a difference sometimes but it's mostly something people take to feel extra safe. Image

They could also ditch the health bars all together and create animation tables:

|Begin Animations|
//Tier 1 - Non-combat state
- Walking
- Sandbox mode
- pvssyr
- Equipment check
- Eat/Sleep

//Tier 2 - Combat initiated
- Running
- Duck/Dodge
- Weapon use
- Healing (Stimpaks)
- Hand/arm signals

//Tier 3 - Combat wounded
- Leg hop
- Leg drag
- Stumble
- Falling down
- Holding limb
- Healing (Stimpaks)

//Tier 4 - Combat incapacitation
- Crawling slowly
- Rolling on ground
- Reaching for sky
- Holding injury

//Tier 5 - Combat death
- Ragdoll fall
- Slump over
- Begin limp state

|End Animations|

This would create a emersion state for focus and concentration over the traditional numbers counting and bar watching of regular MMO's. Obviously those are just brief examples but a much more elaborate set of tables could be created to spice things up.

A good example is World War II Online. They use health and stamina bars that are only visible on the player's side to tell the player how close they are to death, etc. but not for others. They don't have any "health state" meters. The only way you can tell something is going to die or has been damaged is by it's actual damage and/or speed (ie: someone who's shot will slow down or won't be able to stand, vehicles damage are mobility kills or have visible damage with parts falling off, etc. and of course smoke/fire). Of course their engine is much much older so they don't have and blood/gore or limbs being blown off, that of course would be a key element in Fallout Online.

Not really, as its an early perk and few of the other perks available at this time directly effect combat, and even these tend to only effect a certain aspect (bonus HtH damage, for example).

Also, awareness was one of the best perks to get on your first playthrough of FO1/2 (assuming you're not using a guide). In an MMO, especially one with a decent amount of PvP, it can become much more usefull. Sure, it wont be one of those perks that everyone will get, but it will be one of those perks which can provide a great advantage to your team by making it much easier to pick targets to focus fire which will often be much more beneficial in a team fight than toughness, for example.

Just because awareness does not apply a + to damage, health, armor, accuracy, ect, that does not mean it is worthless in combat.

I never took awareness, being aware of the numbers kind of ruins the fun for me, as does health bars. I even used to play Total Annilihation with health bars disabled and all the disadvantages with that because it looked so horrid.

I'm not against other players having that information, but I want the option to turn it off if it is included, even at penalty to me. Why do games studios have to fight and die? War, war never changes : (
