How "real" do you want Fallout Online to be?

Post » Sun Aug 09, 2009 7:14 pm

So how real do you want it?
Personaly I want the game to be very realistic (keeping with the 50's style of course) but still be fun to play.
For example you character must drink water and eat food for time to time, this would be cool and give a reason to the skill Cooking and Outdoorsman (a skill I never did understand) and make places like bars a place to meet real people (because everyone like eating a nice Iguana on a stick whyle drinking a nice cool Nuka Cola) but I also dont want to have death being permanent.

So what do you think?

I like the idea of eating from time to time and drinking as well, that concept reminds me of the "hardcoe mode" FO new vegas is getting only thing being a sleeping type stat not really sure that i would want to see this in the game unless its done tastefully. Maybe you sleep when you log out if your near a bed and then you get a spiffy little minor buff when you get back on later (better buffs for better bedding) if you were no where near a bed you would simply sleep on the ground not giving you a buff. a tent system would be nice if you knew you had to go soon so you can still get a buff out and about, maybe im going to far into this but i like the basic idea Lone Wanderer: Is there anything down there I should look out for?

The only problem with logged out time being used for rest/sleep time is I know from my end that I can put 28 hours in a weekend in game at the keys. This doesnt include idle time where I'd be set up as a vendor or what have you.

Stat penalties for being hungry and thirsty are a good idea - having it so ignoring hunger and thirst carry you to defeated status is not. Requiring sleep is unrealistic as we can't bend time for individual people, so sleep would have to be real time. Requiring I was out of the game for 6-8 hours a day would be maddening.

Im the same way with you but of course you can see perks coming out of this something like less sleep would be needed or maybe just the type of bed would give you the amount of sleep altho its a little unreal nicer beds could make necessary sleep times shorter. Back to the perk thing though even people in real life sometimes aqqure traits to where they work/chill 20 or so hours a day then get 4 hours of sleep and be fine, say people that work 2 jobs a day so just a little sleep would be fine...plus you could always add in energy drinks and different races (if in the game) could need less sleep on average than others Lone Wanderer: Is there anything down there I should look out for?

i got mixed filling about this, what you guys described sounds to much like sim, sleep, wake up take a piss look for water, work ...
my filling about it mostly depends on this being an immersion mechanic or pointless annoyance.

I don't know about the sleep thing, but I like the idea of eating and drinking playing a role. While being forced to eat in an mmo or risk losing stamina or other stats (like in EQ classic) can get annoying and be a potential turn off to some players; I think it might work in the FO ip since getting a chuck of molerat meat to gnaw on shouldn't be difficult at any time.

I especially like the idea of pubs and diners as hubs with some buff bonuses to make it attractive. Kind of like the way SWG use to do it, hanging out at the cantina after running amok for a while. It could be a bit like everything consumed in the location adds a small bonus to a stat for say an hour with a timer that starts as soon as the player leaves the pub. There would have to be an anti-gorging mechanic that caps when the player is full and can't eat anymore unless they wait a bit to "digest." This way players will be encouraged to hang out and shoot the shit, but it will discourage players from simply afking in these places.

I'd guess that food will have the same HoT effects as that in the RPGs, with some of the less savory food having side effects to along with it. For buffs, we have the normal allotment of chems, from Jet to RadX so using foods for buff effects might be a little redundant.

An idea for sleeping in beds could be kind of like the way other mmo's bank up "rested" exp for those players that don't play as much.

as long as eating and drinking isn′t something you can die of, lack of either should give you debuffs to skills and stats, growing worse as hunger/thirst grows. But it shouldn′t be fatal.

forcing eating etc its good but should be done by design, for example less frequent stimpacks thus relaying more on gathering food which is where an outdoors man skill can come handy or something i havent thought on it enough

Just remember: realism != fun, you should know that because otherwise you wouldn't be playing.

And what I mean with that is: Don't make the game all to realistic, sure make it realistic but not every single aspect of the game. Image

Well the way i see the sleep system is that its not something you need its just a log out thing so when you get back on you get a buff or perk for a little bit, ive always thought when i log out of my character they just stand there....so why shouldn't they do something like sleep they don't do it at other times. The food and drink stuff makes sense. Makes you think before you go on a 100 mile trek across the wasteland without water.
Something I'm wondering about though is stimpacks and/or RadAway. It does seem more realistic if they heal over time like in the New Vegas hardcoe, but there would be a lot of people who would be nearly 'defeated', have a stimpack, get beaten anyway, and throw a hissy fit. Where's the comprimise here?

I want to be able to piss...
i want to be able to take a dump... I
want my beard to grow and have to make the choice to shave it or not or HOW to style my beard.
I want my hair to grow so I can look like I have traveled the wastes for a long time, greasy long scraggly hair... or choose to style my hair as I wish..
I want to be able to get tattoos after the Character Creation... I want to be able to get piercings , branding, scars ..
I want to be able to wear stuff, like necklaces , rings, chains, things on my legs, hang stuff off my shoulders , belt, whatever...
I want the screen to go blurry and sway back and forth if I drink to much booze or have that "Farrr awwayy" feeling if I take to much drugs or natural herbs that effect my perception mind...
I want my toon to glow slightly at night if I get HIGH rad dose from exposure too long... MMO's... MMO's never change...

I definitely wouldn't mind the concept of hunting for your own food (or robbing it  ), having to sustain hydrated while trying to balance out any radiation issues (bound to happen if you want to get real), and having to rest and heal yourself appropriately...

In fact I think thats exactly the way it should be, a Fallout MMO needs to be extremely indepth for my taste. :geek: Image Image

V13 should be realistic enough to have some of its aspects not entirely annoying, IMHO. Having to go to a motel to log out is pretty annoying if you ask me.

That beard and high radiation idea that JackMay gave is genius, I want that in V13. :D

Well the sleeping buff can be done like in WOW were if you log out in an In you get a Exp bonus when you log in after like 8 hours (the buff is bigger if you wait longer), you can log out at any time of course but logging out in a In OR if you take the time to make a camp you will also get the buff.

Eating and drinking makes sence in Fallout more then in any other game, look at Fallout 3 (I cant remember Fallout 1 and 2 all that well and I'm re-playing 3 as we speak) most of the enemies drop some kind of food and water in a natural (even if rad infested) way to get you health back. Another example of this is, in a game called Runescape theres a desert area, there you have to drink water from water skins otherwise you lose health, now take this to Fallout not drinking and eating will cause your character to have negatives buffs and after a long time your character might die.

I love the ideia that your character gets scars and your hair grows over time I really love that ideia

I want things to be loosely realistic, being forced to eat and drink every so often wouldn't be bad as long as it is fairly rare and food and something to drink wouldn't be to hard to find. I doubt the bars would be a very big hit though, the vast majority of people will just skip past them and go do a quest. Might be pretty cool to have some sort of PvP arena like a coliseum where people can gather and watch each other. And while you are waiting to play you can all hang out in a bar area and chat with people while watching whoever is fighting at the time.

now making it where if you die permenatly would svck cuz then you'd have to get all your lvl's back and your perks and all the things you've collected. I want very real but still have that Fallout feel to it.

Well, just as "real"as it gets. After all, Fallout is partly about surviving from day-to-day, so you should have to think about your characters needs. Hydration, hunger, radiation, resting.. Maybe even complicated stuff like diseases etc.

And yeah, I like the idea of hair (both facial and normal) growing up with time. Cuz' you know, it's not like you could just go to a barber shop and glue on a beard anytime you want to look like a raggedy-ass wastelander..

And about dying.. Well, personally I would like to see the downsides of dying so severe that you really, really don't want it happen to yourself. Something so bad, that you would rather leg-it away from fight that could be fatal, than take the risk..
It gives the feeling of survival, because that's what Fallout games lack in my opinion. If somebody is foolhardy enough to die in a fight, it's his funeral (if he ever gets one)..

It's a game about a post-nuclear world, so hell, even permanent death doesn't really sound like a bad idea to me.

i agree with with hair and survival too, also very important should be guns, so its not so arcade like in f3 and u should be definitly able to shoot somebody on long distance, so players would be rly carefull where they would head and rather check area few times with binocular or something.like in old ghost recon game, especialy if this is ment to be 1st shooter. otherwise it will be just endless arcade with getting levels and exp points without focusing to survive outhere
