How Big is The Location

Post » Mon Aug 10, 2009 11:34 pm

How Big will The Location in Fallout Online be ? My idea is that it will be the sice of a Continent because of the Amount of player that will flood in the moment the MMO Launch is Started M.J,KIRK

I certainly hope there is a flood of players(more like know there will be). As for Continent do you mean North America? Another drunk conquistador conquering the governor's ball...

personally i dont see it being a whole continent, at least at launch. if they give you everything at launch then what would they give you in their expansions later? Image

Well it would need to be fairly large i'm guessing. And for extra areas, they would need a new server as well. But I'm all for a large area. I'm an explorer. Can't help poking around in old ruins even though it is a death claw hive i.e Old Olney Desmond Lockheart. Proof that good conversation isn't dead.

The best way to avoid a Deathclaw is not to be there in the first place.

Thinking realistic, and hoping the area is going to be large, it will probabally be the size of an entire state or a few states. Just big enough so it will take about 20 hours to cross the map if you are walking and can fight most of the enemies easily.

I am hoping for a rather large 'world' to play around in.. I remember the first time I played EQ, I was amazed by the size of the world left to explore.. I hope it's at least on a scale of something like that.

It would be nice to see the release being the whole United states.

it would be,but we wouldnt need that much at the start,i mean that's a HUGE world map(assuming it's to scale) i could see it starting on one of the coasts or in the midwest which would give plenty of area and they could add to it later.(they gotta have something to add to the game right? :P ) Image

hard to speculate without knowing the full particulars of what the court ruling was, (ie: did bethesda forbid gamesas from using what it might consider it's property in dc and vegas? (though legally that would be impossible for bethsoft to claim since beth could only protect it's concepts and ideas, but not the actual regions....but that's for lawyers to haggle over not me :) )or is gamesas free to use any regions as fair game. if so i'd see chunks of states perhaps. as other have stated maybe parts of the east coast, or the west? groups of 3-5 states with players having the choice of starting areas/states based on preference, faction or other similar mechanics implemeted in the game.

definitely would add some variety as each region would be a little different as far as unique critters/monsters while having similar cross-over species from region to region. that's nothing new as most games do it that way, just stating as an example. being unfamiliar with fo1 or 2(my fo baptsim was fo3 and expacks thereof)i'm not sure how viable the regions covered in them would be but there you go. what that would essentially do is spread the player population about to avoid some overcrowding.

i'm with deathclaw dave, i love the exploration as long as there's the ability to escape from things that are out of your league(or rather the other way around) so the bigger the better. don't want to accidentally blunder into something that will eat me in 1 gulp. hurt me to within an inch of my life as i deserve if i wasn't taking precautions, but that's all.(i tend not to die since i'm VERY cautious while exploring). long winded enough i'd say so i'll stop at that.

Also consider this...
Not only is the World going to have to be big to accommodate everyone who plays, what are the population capacities of the servers going to be? This is supposed to be a desolate wasteland ravaged by global nuclear war. I might be a little odd if there are a bunch of people all in one place.

So since gamesas declined my first message and said it wasn't on topic... I'll try again.

Yeah I agree, the whole US would be very cool however I'm pretty sure that won't happen. It would be awesome though and at least I can hope :D

if there's hardly anyone then they couldn't call it an mmo. an mmo has a large number of people in a game. they could do a good 1-2k players a server if they wanted to and it wouldnt be that bad as far as population wise especially if it's like the whole eastern or western coast of the u.s. Image

The game should incorporate a bit of Guild Wars where the open world is mostly a private instance, with community hubs (cities, etc.) being shared. I wouldn't like to see the entire world instanced as I think random encounters (particularly for open world pvp) would be fitting. But to create that desolate feeling, I think there has to be portions of the world that are simply your own to explore (with, say, your group of up to five people). Plus then you can have sites that are there for you to explore, not shared by the 10 other people doing the same quest at the same time.

If the the maps are simply made large enough to create the same effect, I suspect there will be a lot of dead, empty space. The distance between points of interest can't be so huge that it takes players 20 minutes of running to get there. It may be realistic, but let's be honest, most players are going to get a bit fed up eventually.
