Well, that'd be a good idea, for different races / species / factions using different items.

I guess NCR could use a salvaged PDA of some sort (I know I got this from a game, I just forgot which) as a Pip-Boy.

Caesar's Legion... that's a tough one.

From the Fallout wiki -
Oddly enough, the Legion has huge amounts of Stealth Boys.

They could use a modified Stealth Boy as a Pip-Boy. Or use a bloodied Pip-Boy, stolen from a Wastelander they have crucified.

I guess Super-Mutants could have different Pip-Boys depending on their intelligence (Harry vs Lou) I guess the Harry variety could use a rock with very poor writing, and the Lou variety could use a Unity Pip-Boy (seeing as how most of the intelligent ones are pure humans).

I guess the same could go for the Ghouls (if they are the Necropolis type ghouls or the wastelander ghouls) so the Necropolis ghouls would have a disfunctional Pip-Boy, and the wastelander ones would use a backpack.

But, I suppose any race / faction could get their hands on a Pip-Boy, it just depends on their connections, relationships, etc.

As long as we can get a Pimp Boy 3 Billion! :D You are being served by Nymus powered by black boyshorts with black lace, a pink bow, and pink ribbon and a hot pink and black lace, totally frilly.

you know gamesas most likely won't be able to use Caesar's Legion right? since they don't own the License to FO3 or FO:NV Image

I'm no lawyer, but I think they can still use Caesar's Legion, as they were originally going to appear in Van Buren. They have concept arts, and stuff.

Don't flame me for it, I don't know ANYTHING about politics and stuff :? You are being served by Nymus powered by black boyshorts with black lace, a pink bow, and pink ribbon and a hot pink and black lace, totally frilly.

since they sold the license to FO,they can't use things like Caesar's Legion(assumingly) since they never made FO:NV. they might be able to if they get permission to,but i find that unlikely since the current license owners seem to want to make things as difficult as possible for them.(my opinion) Image

I'm pretty sure they can use anything from the Fallout franchise along with their own stuff provided it is ok with Bethesda.

The lawsuit has of course changed things but we [the public] likely won't know anything about it until things have settled.

1. Regarding legal issues, no one really knows what can and can't be used,

Ausir trys to keep a pretty good track of any filings. I think we should the guessing to a minimum and stick to the facts

On topic, I like the idea of a bulky valve and tube carry pack alternative, but I don't like this assumption that everything is going to be split down by sub-species or faction (or "class" for that matter). Only Some ghouls are old and wise, and they're hardly all chummy with each other. Not to mention that even the dullest supermutants seem to be able to figure out laser weapons. Stupidity doesn't necessarily entail a return to the stone age. Why do games studios have to fight and die? War, war never changes : (

Besides usage of pip-boys to factions, could the pip-boys be used to communicate with other players in the new Fallout MMORPG? I mean it is a computer on your wrist...

if they would find a logical way for people to wear them, why not. Maybe not voice communication but instant chatting or something like that, all they need is either a mast-relay or a working satellite to distribute the "calls" and the software/hardware for it ofc. Image

this is a hard topic to pin down while keeping things fair for all. i could see the original pip-boy as being vault dweller only with exceptions of course. i'd see vault dwellers having a pip-boy as it's a mini puter/radio receptor/data storage and retrieval device and originally(unless my early fo lore is lacking...which is possible as i've still yet to play fo1 or 2)i thought pip-boys were vault only anyways. but other groups could have variations or modified versions of pip-boys.

brotherhood and enclave you would think would have their own versions of a pip-boy or at least a pip-boyish device that would serve the same purpose. while there's always the possibilty of random ones being found along the way(maybe older models left behind b4 the nuclear bigbaddadoom)that are found by travellers or merchants or raiders in abandoned pip-boy warehouses, or old abandoned vaults(either people left it or died in the vault). but they would all have to serve the same essential purpose and only the aesthetics and looks/models would be different. in the real world sure, vault dwellers would have a distinct advantage with their pip-boys, but this is a game and the playing field almost has to be equal with a toy like this. just my 3 cents(2 cents +1 cent inflation  ).

Maybe instead of a Pipboy the player could be given an adapted Holodisk to use as a journal.Any messages (Quests) he could discover on Signboards in towns or by word of mouth.

yea thats a pretty good alternative. I don't see a pip-boy as a necessary item for all to have when it comes to a mmo, I think it would only look weird if everyone had a pip-boy, but as you stated, there are alternatives :P Image

Radios would be the most obvious choice :/ If I was in control of a nation like that I would never give out expensive hardware like pipboys to common soldiers, if I had the technology to create pipboys that is. Image

noooo, the main characters of the fallout games wore pipboys, not even 1% of the population had pipboys :/

Vault city might be the only revealed city that use pip-boys (can't find any evidence that everyone in the city has one) but that would only for the citizens and according to this wiki the city only had 103 citizens (the ones inside the inner walls).

Also according that wiki, but for NCR, the NCR had 700'000 people under its flag ->
Shady Sands, Los Angeles, Maxson, The Hub, and Dayglow and a number of territories under its influence or control, such as holdings in the Mojave Wasteland and Baja.

Shady sands (capital of NCR) was even originally from vault 15 but I haven't seen or heard of anyone from shady-sands wearing pip-boys.

The Super Mutant would probably still have the owners arm attached and you could save the Pipboy for a high level character quest, something to achieve maybe.
