Location of Fallout Online

Post » Mon Aug 17, 2009 9:27 pm

Heya,

If this is somewhere else and I'm just missing it, I apologize. However, is there any word on what part of the country the MMO will take place? West Coast has been done, Tactics took us into Colorado. Fallout 3 is in DC and Bethesda announced the release of New Vegas...

Are we looking at something like Florida or Texas, or... ? Just wondering if there's any word on the general region it's going to be set in. :)

Not bothered about where it starts, but the available area should increase as the population does.

Hawaii is a fun idea but ultimately not feasible seeing as how it would be very difficult to expand, especially in the post-apocalyptic world. he's the zissou.

south america would be very intresting and it would leave lots of room for expansion, or how about europe? Theres lots of cities in europe. Just think of all the post apoclyptic destruction that could be layed waste to.

Hopefully werever they place it there will be a multitude of envoriments. Jungle areas, snowey regions, deserts, plains ect.

I think any where outside of the continental US (save perhaps some regions of Canada and Mexico) would have an impact on the overall feel of the game, as much of the thematic element of Fallout is based on the 50's optimism and the Cold War gone awry, fighting Communism, et al.

That said, setting Fallout in Europe or South America, while it may be an interesting concept, would have a wholly different feel than the product we all know and have come to love.

Or so I'd imagine.

Don't worry, you can always say that the Enclave has built a base in Hawaii and they just make long distance trips to and from to conduct their business.

Its one of the ghoul havens.

Its a long walk across the bottom of the ocean but well worth it if you survive.

The sharks (and some other werid sea creatures) are a problem along the shelf and that first drop from the shelf can be long one, if you don't choose the correct spot.

Then there are the other sea creatures along the bottom to watch out for.
Oh, and the salt doesn't do some of the ghouls much good either. But the cold temperature almost makes up for that (the salt mainly becomes a problem from long saturation times only after you reach the surface and dry air).

Then the volcano's are a bit of issue but it is doable.

Of course that all assumes you don't get lost a couple of times on the bottom, cause it all looks the same in the dark.

Wish we had some glowing ones once in a while.

Chris, you're not missing much.

Hawaii is overrated. You'll go stir crazy if you stay there long enough since it's so small.

Any place in America is correct with a good design, story, NPC's, and landmarks. How about Nevada? I would love to explore Area 51.

I was thinking of London, but then remembered that there's no mention of the Enclave or the Brotherhood going to Europe, although it would be very interesting to see the effects of the War in "neutral" countries. Image

Here's hoping for a Beatles-themed quest on V13.

I also would like to see how the war affected other nations. It could be expansions.

However for an MMO, even if they did just the US 48 states, that is a hefty size of land for the game. Of course, the Great War could have caused some of the Polar Icecaps to melt and raise the water levels enough to whittle down the land mass. >:+)

Or radiation makes most places uninhabitable.

Which raises the question of how exactly radiation is going to affect an MMO. Places that are highly irraddiated would be impossible to camp/farm because the radiation will cook you, or you'll soon find yourself with a rad-away/rad-x addiction.

True! I was also refreshing myself on the history of fallout. The plates shifted so the geology of the world and of the Americas will likely be vastly different from how it is now. There could be splits and cracks in the land, filled with water, the Grand Canyon may be filles with water, or irradiated gasses from the fallout, or even collapsed. Hawaii, as some have mentioned, could have been consumed by the tides during the shift, or the land massed could have raised it like a mountain and any survivors could be completely untouched by the fallout, minus living atop a mountain. Especially those high mountain tops above the clouds could have not been victim to the Black Rains.

So many possibilities!

I am personally wanting it to not have a set geographic area. I want the game to grow and expand as a player makes progress in the game. Every player would start are in a set area, such as Cali. After they have helped achieve all that can be done in that area it would then open up quests for other areas. They could pick to goto any number of other locations to help out. They could pick to help out in Texas, New York, Florida, or any other state. Each players progress is seperately from other players but also connected in the over all purpose of the area.

Example: 10 players goto Washington and 5 players goto Texas. The Washington area would improve and gain ground far faster than the Texas area. Now this would only be possible if you put a limit on what each player could see. For instance, if player A went threw everything in Texas he would be able to see everything. Player B just arrived in Texas so he would still see the burned out ruins that it was before the brotherhood was able to get in there.....

Now due take into account that my thoughts on Texas being a fallout playground as bad ... but come, on we all know Texas would become the true superpower in the world if the bombs did fall :)

BTW, sorry i been gone for some long, haven`t had the internet. Image
