Personally, I hope the lore isn't ALL pre-written. I'm fine with keeping the history, as it sets the game, And the events in FO1 and 2, if the Dev's decide to. But I have a fondness for some control over the game.
I'd like to see a system that allows player lore, Events that have meaning, and shape quests, open areas, Destroy some. I have no attachment to set Starting areas, No love of repetition. Here's my thought:
Say you're a member of the Enclave in Fallout 2, and we'll adapt things here and pretend you get to choose.
There's a number of professions for you:
Scientist, Engineer, Scout, Grunt, Politician, lackey, boot licker, and the like.
Now say you work hard, Gain faction and influence and an event comes up. a Oil tanker comes in randomly, and you have a bad feeling.
Several ways it can play out depending on the players, you could use your massive boot licking skills to become a presidential adviser, and get him to a safer location. The event would have several aspects, You could try to stop the invaders, or you could BE the invaders. You could defect, you could set traps, you could rally the forces for an ambush.
But the point would be, That depending on peoples actions, the president would either live or die. And once it was Finished. It'd be DONE. No repeat instances where you'd get another chance, you just Set the Lore and every player after will reap the changes. Take the enslavement of Arroyo: No new heroes could spawn there, they were enslaved. Caravans would find it empty, Quests would be rendered invalid unless it was solved.
Undoubtedly it's huge, and messy. But I feel it would be worth it in many ways, but it would probably be too much trouble to take on. It would obviously have to be paced, or no one would be able to take part in the lore Creation... but that too has appeal.. such as sniping the president. You just don't expect that.
However they decide to do it, I'm looking forward to getting back in.
