Chat with the Concept Artist

Post » Tue Aug 25, 2009 3:22 am

So,

There has been a lot of comments and questions all over the concept art section. So we decided to create this topic where you can ask questions and share some ideas about the art you seen or going to see in the future..
Feel free to ask anything that is art related here, and we will answer what we can ;)
If you already asked a question in the Concept Art section and didn't get an answer feel free to post it here..

To get the ball rolling I'll introduce myself as Serg, Art Director at gamesas. I will do my best to keep up with all the questions here. -S

I guess I should introduce myself too?

My name is Diego Montoya... *cough*... I mean Jeff. I am the Lead Concept Artist here at gamesas. I like to draw and paint ...yes, this is my perk! ;)

Peace! ---------------------------------------

I really dont have any questions at the moment just wanted to chime in and say that im looking foward to an mmo where the developers are looking for direct feedback from the community. Just becareful, keep your vision in mind but its awsome to see direct interaction with a dev team!

+1 :)

just a small question, how long does it take to make one of these concept art pictures and where do you mostly get your ideas from (just your imagination or do you get some inspiration from movies/books/other games?) Image

oldschoolgamer - Glad to hear it, were all exited to be working on this mmo. The vision of it is solid, and its always interesting to hear back from them community and there feedback.

bikkebakke - Good question, the short answer is From everything you have listed and just the simple things that people pass on the street, may it be a patten of rust on a car or the way an old building is crumbling down. And of course our previous fallout 1 and 2.
Its takes anywhere from 1 day to 3 days per concept depending on the complexity of it and detail level. -S

Wow, awesome, great to have some new people showing up on these boards. Feel free to chat on our forums too ;) ((shameless plug go!))

But seriously, How fun do you find it drawing post apocalyptic kind of things? Some think it's morbid, but Fallout themed settings are the bee's knees to me. Image

Ooh another question - Can you draw me a vault dweller custom made for me? :) Let's call him Seires Noamuth from Vault -24 or something. :) I don't think so, but still would be cool to have this made....maybe some fan artist could do it. hmm.

Also, any plans on releasing some new art? perhaps a nice pip boy concept? Image

Yeah I just saw the swamp image, looks very nice. Good work!

And yeah, just after I posted that here, asked the community if someone is good enough to draw for me. Hell if it's really good, I could use a new tat.

Also, it's really good to hear from you guys in the community now. Makes me even more excited for the game. Image

What's your favorite thing to draw ever? I like to fiddle (poorly) with drawing and for me it's eyes. Image

I snova zdrastvuy, Sergey, I was looked all the concept art on the characters. A bit worrying bias towards armor of the future and so on. After all, society degraded, if you remember - that even some groups of people, such as descendants of the "Chousen 1" became the primitive tribes with spears and bows. I would like to see less emphasis on the futurism.

Some societies degraded, or rather since everything was blown up, some societies had to start from scratch. While some may have been out of touch with the larger settlements, even Sulik from FO2 mentions he knows how to use a sub-machine gun(damned if I ever let him touch anything but a melee weapon though!). You work with what ya have! I'm do hope they bring back some tribal settlements though. It shows the contrast between how each group of people survive and flourish in this world.

That being said, I do love the new concept art. There is a sort of refinement and polish. I feel that some time has passed and people are beginning to find themselves and prosper once more. However, while others prosper, others may fall behind. When others fall behind, jealousy stirs, and shortly after, conflict. I have no doubt that their will be a mix of basic, even crude weapons, to the rustic traditional firearms that survived the past, the energy weapons that began to rise before and after the bombs fell, to whatever new and advanced arsenal that may come.

Mr. Serg, following my wall of text, am I reading too much into the pictures  ?

when working on the concept art for stuff from the old games, do you just work on the broad terms (like leather armour) or do you study old official artwork to draw inspiration?

Also, I think it wouldn't hurt to mention that I'm the guy who made the original fallout online art that is now on the front page.. seems like everybody here for some reason prefer not to mention it.. hmm.

Hi!
first of all i have to say that i love the concept art that i have seen so far =)

There is one thing i′m wondering about, when you get to work on concept art for a game how much freedom do you have?
what guidelines and restrictions do you get?
