My general thoughts on the Crysis 2

Post » Mon Nov 08, 2010 6:15 pm

To be honest - disappointed. This is a rant post, if you don't like it then w/e. Just expressing my opinion. Crytek need to know where they've screwed up. Also - spoiler warning from here on.

So the best thing about the first game was the freedom. The amount of open space and truly destructible environments (trees could fall, the shacks could be blown to pieces) allowed you to approach situations in so many different ways. It was a joy to replay it over and over. Not only that, but the nanosuit was far better. Sure, it was a little bit more complicated, but it was so much smoother to use. Powers weren't mixed together, they were defined.

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING MAKING SPRINT A POWER :| In Crysis 1, you could sprint in any power without it draining energy (and you'd run as fast as in Crysis 2). However, the one exception was using the speed power, which make you INSANELY fast, and ran your energy to zero pretty quickly. This was brilliant, because you could escape firefights in a blink. Really felt like you had an awesome suit on. But it's not in C2 cause if you used it, you'd probably of reached the other side of the level :/ Then there's the Strength power, ruined again. It was far better in Crysis 1 when you could choose this power. There was no delay in jumping and punching (as in C2 you have to hold the button down). What was possibly the most awesome thing about it in C1 was also that if you shot in power mode in ADS, it would drain your energy slightly as you would have zero recoil. Your strength counteracted the recoil, and that was great.

And I'm still not done... WHY DOES YOUR ENERGY DECREASE IN ARMOR MODE :| This is another pointless addition. In C1 when you were in armor mode, which was the standard mode you'd be in if not in anything else, your energy would only decrease when shot/falling from great distances. This makes sense. In C2, it is constantly draining when on, and still when you get shot. This is because it's not the default power. Instead, your default power is NOTHING. That makes zero sense. Think about it - you would always want armor on from a defensive view so you wouldn't get shot from behind and killed unexpectedly. It's not a problem in C2, but it's still worse than before.
Fortunately stealth mode is pretty much the same. Shame the sprinting drains your energy though.

What else? Well they dumbed down the aliens in this game. In crysis 1, fighting aliens and humans was too totally different things. They were 'flying squid', so made for totally different firefights. In C2, they're just another skin for a human; 2 arms, 2 legs, a head and a gun. Woop-de-doo! What was wrong with being original? A ton of alien games already do the whole human re-skin thing.

Whatever, at least they put boss fights in the game. Oh wait... :| So the boss fights are pretty much just normal enemies. There is not even one 'big' boss which you must defeat. They missed out on such epicness here. For example, imagine if something like this was going over the city and you had to jump building to building to blow it up: (also take note on the use of his powers in this video, THIS is how it should be done!)

They really missed out there. Instead... instead you had to just fight 4 strong aliens. This was so boring, I just put armor mode on, approached them, and kept power punching them. Job done. Couldn't believe it when that was it. It would have been so much better if they were sprawled throughout the city on the rare occasion, not just 4 dumped in one place and labeled as a boss. lame.

And that video above reminded me of the weapons. I have a few issues on this. See the gauss rifle in the video? That weapon is in C2 (modified), and I only got it twice. Right towards the end. With like 4 shots. What? I understand limit the ammo - it's very powerful. But it's used so little it might as well not be in the game. That, or I missed it many times. Surely against aliens these weapons would be all made in great quantities. We knew there were aliens about, so why not make them!? No excuse for limiting their use so much.

Final complaint is the story. No mention of why the aliens changed from 1 to 2, and no mention of Nomad/Psycho, the protagonists in Crysis/Crysis Warhead. Also the ending 'surprise' was uninteresting and made no sense.

To sum it up, they dumbed down the gameplay, they dumbed down the level design to being way too linear and they dumbed down the story. I hate to sound like a PC fanboy, but Crytek totally console-ized the game to the point that all originality has gone.

They used to push the boundaries of what we knew of PC games, and had much respect for that. Now, they actually took a step back on PC (DX10 on C1, DX9 on C2) and are just another boring developer now.
At least we still have valve :) They know how to handle the PC market while still making great console games.

It's supposed to bring discussion.
Infact, I know, let's be against discussion. In a forum. For discussion.

You realize you can actually still use strength to reduce recoil? You just have to activate it as oppose to being a passive benefit to Power Mode. Nanosuit 1 had way too little energy.

Run for 2 seconds in Speed mode, WARNING LOW ENERGY!

Shoot 3 bullets with recoil control strength mode, WARNING LOW ENERGY!

Nanosuit 1 suffered from over specialization.

Sure you faster but for 2 seconds. Nanosuit version 2 is more energy efficient and streamlines Speed and Strength into one. As you mentioned, Speed Sprint would not work well at all in Crysis 2's smaller environment.

You know what would've been awesome?

If Crysis 2 started out right where Crysis left off, and then ended up in New York after a time lapse of some sort.

Of course, this wouldn't have made sense to the faceless mass audience of the 360, so it couldn't happen. Personally, I expect something like this to come in the form of a mod after either the Sandbox 3 is released or we use the leaked beta version with the actual game.

Dude, about the gameplay, is just fine to me. Is about adapting, is like if you wanna compare Halo MP gameplay with Halo 2/3 MP gameplay, that's just ridiculous. You have to do practical and balanced some things, specially in MP, the delay on jumping... well, can't you just think 2 seconds ahead? About draining energy while running, well, it makes you be careful when doing that and how long, not run undefinitely. The modules can help you in many ways, both in SP and MP, is about adapting to situations. If everyone is going cloak online, there is a module so you can detect it. If you're playing campaign in post-human warrior [like me] while you can't activate armor in the beginning, where both enhanced armor and deflection are useless, the module of nano recharge fits perfectly.

Anyway, if you wanna complain, complain about the cheating and unfair circumstances online, not graphics or gameplay, 'cause everyone think different about them [there's a post in the forum about the textures in very high DX9 in Crysis 1] and some might like the changes in gameplay, some don't. Crysis 1 is not like a tradition, is just one idea of gameplay, is not like breaking the whole idea of gameplay in the franchise of Command and Conquer (that goes all the way through more than 15 titles) and change it for bad in C&C 4, there you can complain. You have to accept that companies this magnitude can't live of charities and risk sales of a title in which they invested money and time, Crysis 1 was for PC only, but not all PC's; they don't want to take the same risk in the sequel, so they try to sell across-platform, man, are obvious business reasons, you can't just go around crying like a baby for doing it cross-platform, as if only the elite level of gamers had the right to play a title they take as their own.

Watching for cheating, hacks, etc. are the responsability of any developer of a game, no excuse, and even more when you pay for it. Even online "free" (Wolfteam and that stuff) games watch for it and have it very rigorously controlled, and we're saying those games are free, you just pay for online privileges [weapons, equipment, etc.]

Yesterday I was panicked about all the reported cases of cheating, 'cause maybe today I'm able to buy the game, but comparing to other games in similar circumstances, this is not the first time it happens. It happened with C&C3 Kane's Wrath when in cheathappens.com you could easily cheat, and it was until v1.02 that calm arrived. EA really don't care about quality or annoying details for them, like the svcking C&C4, or the huge bug in Kane's Wrath 1.02 with ZOCOM predators, never released a 1.03, even when promised years ago. As long as they sell and no major complains are reported, they don't give a s***.
