Crytek utterly, utterly FAILS!

Post » Wed Nov 10, 2010 7:27 am

Sorry Crytek, but if you're going to call it New York, reference New York locations and use New York topography, make sure you get the details right!

Apparently, this version of Manhattan has the NJ Turnpike running through it, Staten Island is 1/2 mile away from City Hall by car, and the freaking Interstate 635 is a mile away.

Come on, guys. Pick up a street map or something. Use Google Maps. Do some research!

I'm sitting here playing the game, and I run up smack dab into something that just makes no freaking sense, and any sense of immersion I may have felt just flies right out of the window. Like subway stations with bathrooms and vending machines in them. Or city buses that look nothing like NYC city buses.

SMH.

i agree with the original poster.
That does matter if it's where you live, what you grew up around...
I was so happy once Left 4 Dead 2 came out..it had my hometown in it as the starting level. Savannah GA

But... the last part of the chapter took place in a 3 story mall...

We don't have a 3 story mall, nor will we in the foreseeable future considering our economy is just as ****, if not more **** than a lot of other places in the US...

So, yes, i do get what this guy is saying...but what he's talking about is even more major: things that are commonly known by most people, AND major landmarks being close by although they are miles apart and it makes no distinction of that in the game and you can even walk from one location to another...

It is a bit annoying that they couldn't have been more accurate, but it's par for the course really. Not many video games get things right. Hell, Crysis: Warhead couldn't even get some simple US military structure right. I guy who doesn't get into Delta, an army infantry unit, does not go on to become a Marine Corps fighter pilot. People still loved that game. It's one of those things where most people don't care, so the developer won't put in the extra time worrying about accuracy.

Don't get me wrong, NYC is the setting for a lot of things, so I'm used to creative license being taken in the depiction of NYC.

But when you've got the kind of major factual inaccuracies that Crysis 2 has through out, it might as well not be New York anymore; it's just some fictional, generic sci-fi cityscape.

You know, I have never been to New York, and same for 98% of players. So, to be honest, I believe them when they tell me Wall street is near central park or whatever. Seriously, I don't give a f*ck about it, as long as the gaming experience is great, and definitely it is.

IMO Somebody (based in NY) should create an accurate New York base model and license it out to developers and film makers to alter according to their needs. It could be scalable and come with all the research material they used to build and update it.

I first though this when I played Prototype a while back. It seems like everybody is building their own New York from scratch all the time and it seems like a huge duplication of effort to me.
