My idea stems from having played HALO to Homefront and Cod for many years in online game play and linkup with friends. I think all these FPS's have brough a new creativeness through character development. object orientation and AI improvements. But they are all somewhat the same and their predictability is becoming all too familiar for a real newness and longevity. The turn around time for playing time seems to be growing ever shorter (excluding COD), but also there is less thought in the design of these games. So what if the graphics are more realistic. Go back a few year to Operation Flashpoint and dicern the graphic detail to that of today. There is very little improvement really, as one newer game seems to forshadow a release its week previous like race to be the number one seller for the least possible time. I reflect on the box office block-busters of movies in the late 20th century and how their grandeur was emphasised by glossy rehetoric and wiz-bang special effects. Now ee have this in our online games and we are still not satisfied - WHY?
Well - I'd say that war and racing and fantasy are the only real sellers that seem to last and noone has gone out on a limb to develop a new genre. Whoa - thats alot of R&D money that could go to waste.
But wait there's more - Whilst in all these FPS games you gain points and move up the field of ranking to be number one. Some difficulty arises in Campaign mode but its never as tricky in multiplayer because theres more than one of your kind. Id suggest that in multiplayer that as you rise in rank it becomes more difficult for you in terms of - you lose defense bonuses because you dont need them. You're accomplished in skill, so why do you need protection as a noob. If you have weapon loadouts superior to noobs you have an added advantage that they will aspire towards. thats enough on its own to continue ranking up. If taking or removing protection from you isnt enough, there should be a limit to amunition in any gun and scavenger mods, as in some games already, may be an optional attachment over some other attribute that has a clearly defined balance to the character design standard of that game. Look back at Borderlands character design where therer were over 100 different guns of choice but it was the character design that defined special features of play and optimal weapon type. It still has a regular online audience 3 years later. Games die when they dont feed and nurture some design constraint and style of play. Homefront for instance has a slowly declining audience because again the FPS is very similar to COD, and that means you are playing another map with similar objectives. Where is there, in any game FPS that you are pitted against the oposing force but have the AI also to contend with as spawn creatures and random encounters are something you cannot predict can spoil your plan. We may have reached the pinacle of FPS design for the moment. I can't see in any developer notation of something worth mentioning at least now thats being developed for the not too distant future (2 years). It could be that Duke NuKem's back dating of all time is a relief that they may be taking heed of whats happening in their market, and that it might be a game that sets us thinking differently. It may also help to convince us that game design is on the decline. Game programmers don't get paid great salaries and generally dont benefit from royalties. Whilst we are still inspired by HALO and the premier releases that made the game industry what it is today it is now many year since a really great leap of ingenuity has been released. I have decided to aviod reading advertising hype and watching pre-release vid-shorts for teh first time in about 15 years now, as they dont really provide anything to say in the promo game, beta release and demo is of worthy quality. When something is really great, it shines way brighter that anything else around it, and it retains its integrity for generations like an icon of recognition that it was the benchmark in moving forward. We are all stagnant now.
