Calm Convo About Crysis 2, it's strengths and flaws

Post » Thu Nov 11, 2010 7:42 pm

I want to create a topic just conversing about Crysis 2, without the flamers, ragers, trolls, and fanhats (combination of *sshats and fanboys). where we can talk about what we like and dislike about the game, and our oppinion of it. Trolls, please stay away, you have 9001 derailed topics to go play in.

I'll start:
I think that this game could have been better, but that once the bugs are sorted out, it will be a decent game. I think the only 2 reasons people are getting so upset is because they were expecting more from a game that was a sequel to this: "At the time Crysis was released, and years thereafter, it has been praised for its milestones in graphical design (commensurate with high hardware requirements). Crysis 2, a full sequel, was released in March 2011." (quoted-wikipedia) On the other hand, I don't understand why it was released when there are so many obvious debilitating bugs. A lot of people say that the bugs are not game-breaking, but even though crashes and inability to access multiplayer may not break the game, they do put a crimp in it.

Here are the games pros and cons as I see them. Just an FYI I have only played the PC version so there is sure to be some differences. I see far more bad and good, but I am sure there is a level of bias in my opinion, and I would like to hear yours:

Pro's:
-a nice storyline that creates a nice level of immersion and reality, without going overboard in making everything true to life
-excellent gameplay to go and shoot some people without having to think to hard
-fairly easy for new players to get into, while being different enough from the first game to offer something new to old players

Con's:
-graphics that are equivalent and arguably lower than it's predecessor, a game from 4 years ago (Copyrighted 2007 according to the box, it's now 2011)
-plagued by bugs that should have been sorted out before release, I mean I know EA's habit as a publisher is to push dev's to pump out as many games as fast as possible, but this is ridiculous...
-noticeable errors in positioning of 3D sound locations
-extremely linear gameplay, the same experience every time. you may get past this guy by shooting him or cloaking and running around him like a sissy, but you've still gotta go past him and not some other guy
-terrible AI. In Road Rage I believe it is? I was sitting in the underground tunnel by the vehicle at the beginning, cloaked, and yet a helicopter still flew past me shooting dead at my position...
-absolutely no difference between the difficulties. I have run all the way through the campaign on all the difficulties except for normal and have seen no noticeable difference in gameplay except that a couple guys keep re spawning over and over and I can keep killing them for more ammo... it's more of a nusince than an actual challenge...

I don't believe it will be to terrible a game once it gets fixed up. That being said if I had known that these issues were here before picking up the Limited Edition, I would have bought the standard one. What good are multiplayer unlocks when you can't use them right? reminds me of the crysis 1 limited edition... *flashback of being unable to use the amphibious APC and raging* lol, good times.

I'm sorry. But the mere fact that they excluded DX11 and removed all the fun sandboxing elements from the gameplay killed the game for me. They told us to think vertically, and i listened to them. So i should be able to kick a car and use a strength jump to scale a wall. I mean i can kick a two ton car 30 feet down the road but the second i want to use said car to get over a chain link fence? Hell no! you gotta go through that torn down drug store kid! The art direction in this game is very good. I can't shoot down trees anymore, i can't even kill the freaking zombies that are hanging out in front of a vending machine. I can't grab the soldiers and use them as human shields. When i see an enemy i can either cloak and run away like a scared kitten or try to kill him. I will give you that the storyline is MILES ahead of crysis one. The storyline is what killed crysis one for me. Don't get me wrong it was a fun game and i still play it today, but god i was so dissapointed to be yet another space amrine killing aliens.

The immersion of the story and scripting was fantastic IMO, that is what you get for bringing in a Sci-Fi author with a diverse collection of writing behind him (Richard Morgan - Black Widow comics to Alterd Carbon and beyond - all awesome). If you like the scripting in this, Mr. Morgan is contracted to EA to write the stories for 2 more Sci-Fi games. I love the level design, but agree with the fences and buildings that seem to be scalable but are sadly not. And I also agree that you should have been able to use people you pick up and human shields, I tried doing this early in the game but it was just a waste of time.

One thing that did annoy me was that Alcatraz is mute the whole game, and you are basically just a warmish body in a suit that Prophet has essentially taken back over. Only the Marines seem to give any credit to Alcatraz and that is only for being a former Marine. Some of Alcatraz's story would have fleshed the over all game out a bit I think. And the surround sound quality isn't that great, all the weapons sound as though they are being fired from directly infront of you most of the time, But I did really enjoy boiling the squids with Microwave gun, that was a nice little weapon to broaden the diversity, wouldn't have minded using some Alien hardware though.

The in game cinematic sequences rocked, that scene where you are running through the concrete canyon to the rescue helicopter only for the massive waves to come crashing down the street, ruining everything was so good it hurt, that scene is forever imprinted in my memory. And I really enjoyed the persecution of Gould through the first levels, it was like a riff on and nod to the Half-Life story for me. that and all the same asides that are presented in the game, like the CELL operatives argueing with the Marines and the Conspiracy Radio channel really helped build that immersive quality.

Great Thread - Good to see more mature discussion is coming to the fore on the forums. - MullPig

I think he should be banished to a tropical island, never to return.

The story was mediocre at best. Nothing really connected. It was just...there. On a side note, he bashes Master Chief and the Halo series for having a silent character that you never see, but look at Alcatraz.

Maybe his books are okay. I haven't read them. But they would have been better off just going from the ending of Crysis. He did all this **** up to the release of Crysis 2, but the storyline was no better then any other game.

You know i just realized something else about the nano-suit. I have a power armor that can kick parked family sedans against the wheel direction on freaking pavement, rip 50 caliber machine guns off of their mounts and fire them without worrying about the recoil, run as fast as an automobile and is able to withstand point blank shots from aforementioned 50 calibers. But i can not pick a 100-200 pound man nor can i climb up a wall that is only twice my height. I feel so cheated. At least in prototype when they gave me ridiculous powers i was able to use it to jump over and climb fences and walls.
