Your Rant for April 4th

Post » Thu Nov 11, 2010 8:21 pm

Ok, here's my soapbox rant for today.

Crytek has a right to change their focus to Console gaming. No hate from me on that. It seems to be a great way to reach the majority of the gaming community. I for one enjoy many of the 360 games made now a days. I have no complaint about that. What I will complain about though is getting what seems to be an unfinished product without the advertised features, and that the PC community was mislead.

This game (when I preordered) was advertised as a DX11 game that would put my system to the test. What we got was a 1/2 finished console port...

I understand the change in direction, I do. PC gaming is just not as profitable as it use to be, if ever. What I don't understand is the lack of transparency regarding this. Just a press release stating “we will be changing our focus to Consoles for our next project” would have been enough.

Did they intentionally mislead the PC community to get more sales? Did Nvidia, EA, and Crytek have problems coming to agreement on what would be included? Did EA put too much of a rush to get it out the door and decide to leave out the features / QA? Can anyone say for sure?

With no one telling us anything aside from a few forum posts, what can we assume? The lack of contact with customers is unacceptable. We feel (justified or not) like we have been abandoned with a less than stellar product. We need contact about the issues listed above. We can figure out who is to blame later.

FYI: Screaming curse words at the top of your lungs (or keyboards) won't get us an update any quicker.

Well said. I agree. While it's a sharp kick in the nuts that Crytek went Console, I wouldn't be anywhere near as upset about Crysis2 if they'd been up front about it and not straight up lied about dx11 support.

I agree sort of, well yeah I agree, although I don't care about Dx11, some of these bugs of I have been getting are just not acceptable from a "finished" product. To me, it feels like they ran out of time with the PC version, and this is half through the beta to complete stage.

I know what you are saying, although I have followed the games development over the past few months and I knew what I was going to get. So forgive me if I don't really understand the sudden shock on launch day by a lot of people. There are components in the game that I would prefer removed such as the constant help hints and the visor which although is nice and helpful, it is actually a well disguised tool for younger or less experienced players to complete each level.
Unfortunately, us PC gamers that have been playing more advanced and complex games over the decades and the relatively new simpler model of console gaming must learn to live together lol.

I will say one thing though, when I first heard of a new Crysis game I initially thought I'd give that a miss because I don't want to be upgrading my PC hardware until next year or so, which itself says a lot for Cryteks reputation and possible loss of revenue from the release of a new title. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the game ran so smooth and looked so nice. Yea I know textures are lower res in the game but the amount of detail in each level is phenomenal. If all of those textures were higher and sharper you'd need a beast of a machine to run the game and clearly that wasn't the developers choice this time round.

I hear you but I can't agree with the lack of information as there have been many videos available showcasing the developers work and the forum guys on here keep us up to date. Most people expect them to tell us everything about everything but that can't always be possible. In any case this isn't a new concept, it happens all the time but every time it happens there is the same hatred and venom spited at the devs. I remember the infamous CoD MW2 scenario, people were angry and saying "sod you IW we will wait for Battlefield BC 2". Then when that came out it was "sod you Dice we are waiting for Treyarch they won't let us PC gamers down". Then it was "Sod you Treyarch Crytek will show you how to make a proper PC game". Now it's "sod you Crytek we will wait for Battlefield 3" lol.

I agree on the fact that we get unfinished titles a lot these days. In defence I'd say that it's not as disastrous as the launch of Blops. I had to run that game in not only the lowest graphics settings possible but use driver tweaks to use lowest quality possible, just to have enough framerates to enjoy the game. It took weeks for them to fix it and it still doesn't run as good as it should.

But what can we do? Apart from raise awareness to the media that publishers push out games too soon. Crysis 2 was in development since 2007 and announced in 2009. Couldn't EA have waited another few months? Maybe a lot of it is more financially political, you only have to read up on the case of Vince Zampella and Jason West to know that release dates of titles or DLC can be strategically placed to coincide with rival releases.

That's what I think anyway. It's unfortunate, but Meh... at least the game runs nice and is playable for a large majority, he says while hoping not to incur the wrath from those that can't play it. :)

Sure they are. Counter-Strike Source, a Valve product, launched in worse shape than this did. You could cause everyones screen to shake by typing "shake" in console. You could crash servers with console commands (took over 3 years to fix by the way) You could remove walls, turn on wireframe, turn autoaim on, show people through walls.

If only that were possible :P.

I'm afraid that some of us (like me) won't be quite even after the bugs are fixed and DX11 is implemented. You can't take a wide open PC game like Crysis and turn it into to a corridor shooter like Halo without getting some heartbroken fan boys...

I think what we will be seeing instead is more and more PC games being "streamlined" for console as most of them are going to the multiplatform release. Dragon Age II is a perfect example, the first was a throwback to old school RPG's that kicked our butts even on normal difficulty settings. Now it's a glorified hack and slash title...

I know there is no way to change this direction that games are headed. All I ask is that the developers be honest with the customers they are trying to market to

Yea it is sad really. You never know, when a new generation of consoles come out they might start to have a demand for more complexity in games. I doubt it though lol. And yea you are right about honesty. We'll just have to adopt a believe it when I see it approach to all games from now on, and to not pre-order. I was guilty of pre-ordering this time again after the demo tickled my fancy lol.
