Skyrim itself: the environment

Post » Thu Nov 11, 2010 5:26 pm

While Bethesda has only shown a few screenshots of the environment, and a few panned scenes in the trailer, what do you guys think of the environment? Do you like the setting of a cold, mountainous Nordic type area?
Or did you prefer the relatively level plains of Cyrodiil?
Did the vastly changing bogs, plains, and mountains of Morrowind more suite you?

I like the overall cold and rugged environment of Skyrim. I doubt it'll be as good as Vvardenfell, seeing how alien it was and how much fun I had exploring Morrowind.

I loved Morrowind so much variety, but I have to say if they give the variety they promise, and is hinted at in the screens they've provided, this could over take it for me.

Basically, what I want is not Oblivion where everything basically looked the same and you couldn't tell the difference from the middle of the map to the sides of the map top to bottom, if I walked away and had my wife place me somewhere randomly I couldn't tell where I was because it all looked the same.

they said in an interview that just because it is a cold environment doesn't mean it won't be pretty and beautiful. After the developers made skyrim they were dying to make great environments with lots of trees and plant life.
Look at the water with the trees and mountain in the background http://elderscrolls.com/skyrim/media/screenshots/lake-mountains/
Tell me this isn't the most incredible graphics for an open world game http://elderscrolls.com/skyrim/media/screenshots/mountain-forest-path/
and this was kind of like a place in OB but its much more detailed http://elderscrolls.com/skyrim/media/screenshots/lake-waterfall/
This will be the most incredible environment TES has ever seen. At first i wasn't happy with their choice for the province but after these screenshots i was blown away

Or the Shivering Isles.

I didn't think about Shivering Isles!

When Shivering Isles came out, I felt the same joy I had from exploring in Morrowind. It felt like a completely new game for me.

its way better than oblivs bland setting
but morrowind had a better one, mostly because there were drastically different areas, including skyrim-esque areas like the bloodmoon expansion

I love the cold, so the tundra environment really interests me, and I hone it gets extra snowy.

That second one is hard to answer, since each game has such a different setting from the last. I personally just love a unique setting, like Vvardenfell, with its unique cultures and people, not to mention all the interesting political conflicts. Cyrodiil was great too, it just didn't have as much of a unique vibe... it's kinda like "wow! pretty! but I've seen this kind of stuff before...". However, I absolutely love the Shivering Isles setting. Skyrim looks to be a very unique setting as well. Sure it's got hints of Cyrodiilic culture, but the whole mysterious unknown vibe of the uncharted mountains and tundra should be very intriguing.

Skyrim isn't all mountains and snow, so there will be more variety in areas. I'm hoping that is conveyed though.

I would like it better if it were used to good effect, rather than just be eye-candy. IE, I would be impressed if we could go skiing, dogsledding, or iceskating. Snow in actual drifts. Avalanches. Thermokarsks (iced-over lakes with flamable methane gas). Icesickles.

You know ...a real winter wonderland. Please.

There have been hints at a Daggerfall expansion or DLC for Skyrim.

The regions are all very interesting, but personally I'm hoping for some more screenshots soon that do more than just showcase mountainscapes and the dungeons. I really want to see some more contrasting areas of the environment, like beneath a bridge running over a river or the pathway along some steep hills.

Cyrodiil was pretty flat and not very interesting in terms of topography. Basically, it reminded me of Solsthiem. Skyrim seems more like Vvardenfell, craggy, mountainous and overall, just more interesting in terms of level design possibility.

I'd be open to that, if it was done Mournhold style. I think redoing all of High-rock would be a disservice to the Daggerfall game.

Snowy environments have always been my favorite in real life and games, so I couldn't be happier with the setting.

I don't just like the location. I like the whole setting (civil war, etc.)

And I still can't believe how epic it will be to climb the Throat of the World.

Anything is better than the bland Tolkien-rip-off-ness of Oblivion. Even if the game had taken place entirely in a peat bog.

He and Pete also "hinted at" confirmation of mounts by quipping about "how would we sell Horse Armor." You've got to take anything those two used car salesmen say with a grain of salt salt lick. ;)
