Crysis 2 causing my video card(s) to make a grinding sound!

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 1:46 pm

Hi

Please note, this only happens when playing Crysis 2 and no other game!

My Geforce 9800 GTX video card was making a grinding sound when playing Crysis 2, I thought this was a problem with the fan itself so I took it out, had a fiddle around with the screws, clean out the dust and reinserted it back in but unfortunately no luck in solving the grinding sound problem.

So, well maybe it's time for a small upgrade anyway, so I bought a Sapphire HD 5770 which I received this morning, all went fine in the installation, I loaded up Crysis 2 expecting the grinding sound not the happen but to my shock and surprise the grinding sound is back!

What is going on here please? I'm sure it's the video card fans and not my CPU and PSU fans when I look closely to pinpoint where the grinding sound is coming from.

I have Windows 7 64 bit, 4 gig DDR RAM, Athlon 7850 dual-core CPU, AsRock AliveNF5SLI-1393 motherboard with a 650 watt PSU.

Any suggestions and information appreciated, thank you.

mhm both cards have it? even a new AMD card?

Mhm try to uninstall previous drivers with driversweeper and reintall in safe mode the new amd ones

Be sure it is really the fan of your vid card and not something else :)

Well, i have a HD5770 too (Ultra Durable by Gigabyte) and i can listen a light sound coming from the vga, cause of the capacitors. I can't listen to the sound while i'm concentrated on the game, but the sound is there.

You must know that with some games this sound is more loud, with other is more low. It depends. I remember that with Crysis (1) my capacitors used to litterally shout during the intro.

I think it's not the fan but the capacitors... if it's the fan you can just put it down from the AMD Catalyst Control Center

Thanks for the speedy replies, yes same grinding sound with both cards (old and new). :-( Maybe my motherboard is the core of problem?

I will triple check to see where the sound is coming from again in the next hour. :-)

2 different models of cards....same problem? I'd say the pci-e slot is suspect. Or if your card is by the hard drive....do what the above said

i think 3 poss:

1) hard disk
2) capacitors of the vga (not the fan..)
3) pci-e slot problem (i don't think, watch to the performance, are the same? if so, it isn't)

bye ;)

Possibly a hard drive problem but why is the grinding sound (which is quite loud) only happening when playing Crysis 2 in game?

I'd think it's the hard drive. It could be pronounced in Crysis 2 due to the streaming from the hard drive. I know that they stream textures from your HDD, and possibly other things too. You could try to add this line to an autoexec and see if it minimizes the noise: r_TexturesStreaming=0 That disabled it in Crysis, it might work for Crysis 2 also.

OK... guys, you are going to piss yourselves, I've solved the problem and am very embarrassed.

After spending wasted minutes of taking out my sound card, wireless adapter and checking my bios settings and trying to work out where the sound is coming from...

I looked to the side of my desk and noticed my XBOX 360 controller vibrating on the laminated floor. *MAJOR FACEPALM*

Time to turn the vibration off.

Thanks for the replies, I need to go and sink my head into a bucket of cold water now! :)))

Dude... The same happened to me with a gtx 275 and crysis 1... I thought the problem was with the videocard as well... But for my surprise the psu died... So i sugest you take a closer look at your psu... It's unlikely both of your vga's will have the same noise problem.... I sugest... Get another psu and try it...

LOL That's awesome! I guess Crysis 2 is the only game to have such outstanding support for the Xbox 360 controller!

S.hit's about to hit the fan.

Also, bet you'd never see a thread like this for a console.
