Those alien tentacles

Post » Mon Mar 21, 2011 3:11 am

One thing bothers me about the great game Crytek has bestowed on us...the tentacles.

There they are, in plain sight taunting you. Cannon fodder for everyone to scope in on. Easy money. Furnished with legs, weapons, armor, the Ceph are not dumb. Their technology is quite advanced. How can they just leave their weakness exposed?

Are they cocky? Arrogant? "Here it is, if you can hit it jarhead".

Do they need it exposed?

Is it just a unique gameplay mechanic? Headshots for CELL, back shots for grunts.

Do you like them? Why are they exposed?

they conserve resources as they are not from earth? couldn't be bothered as they are disposable and having no weak spot in cowardly, or maybe they wanted to make em easy for the people coming from COD?

Hey.... They are trying to impress the Ceph ladies.... Don't you know anything about Ceph life style?!
You see, if your showin' your tentecals then that means you some fly Ceph swag right there.
just like in the first game they were completely covered... but they where not doing too well with the chicks.

because they are cephalopods, and last time I checks, ceph is short for cephalopods, so then ceph are really "squid" as the game puts it many times, and im guessing they dont need to be in the open, maybe they need air? I dont know, but clearly they can be covered up mostly by armor, the ceph commander being proof of having a shield.

It's also reasonable to expect that Ceph military doctrine dictates that you let no enemy get behind you: "Enemies ahead, their corpses behind". Works especially well if you're not armored on your back.

There are several possible reasons that they keep their back open:
1. As B2B_Boom stated, they don't have enemies behind them as a plan - just in front (where they are armored like hell)
2. Maybe an easy in/out as unlike the scout-suits from C1, here they have a lot less room for everything, including the "driver", so it is easily possible that they had to leave a small part out so the Ceph itself could get into the suit easier.
3. Similar as above, just that they have to make room for their tentacles (which they can't cut off. They are squids, after all)
4. They ran out of material for those and where would YOU start to conserve material for armor? Front or back?

Could be also a mix of several reasons.

Consider this, the HUMAN force (at least the majority except for Prophet/Alcatraz), so the Marines, CELL, etc. likely doesn't cover up their face. CELL do, but probably not with anything bullet proof. I like it there, because it means that everyone has a weakness. You do too in the nano suit, if that suit energy gets fried you're a sitting duck. Headshots work decently well too haha. So its a nice gameplay element but it also isn't unrealistic to think that maybe if it was all armor plated, it would restrict movement too much, like if we put on the strongest metal all around our heads (I guess what knights did back in the day haha)

Ever heard of Kevlar? That stuff in helmet-form is very small - and the Marines WEAR such helmets. There are even versions with BULLETPROOF visors, usually seen on SWAT-officers instead of military as on the long term, they are a bit hindering but they exist. Easy to imagine that 2023 they were able to develop a more mask-like version similar how the mask CELL looks like. So, it's quiet possible that the CELL-operatives are 100% covered in armor.

Ahh I see. Now I know the reason those heavies looks so mad!

The CELL have nothing covering their faces...good point. That's it! That's the reason they stand facing the wall! Don't want to expose their weakness, no kevlar facemask!

I never thought of the Ceph having to climb in the armor...good point.

But did you like having the weakspot for you? I liked the "splash" when you hit the cream filling, but something so cool as waving squid-arms need some proper explanation. I do like the thought of "enemies ahead, corpses behind". But the Ceph seem to stand around showing their backside.

Of course they do! We humas (really) started to exist in like ~3000 years? And they? How many lightyears to they exist? Well, it's a bit strange if you think about it. That the humans could improve from a candle to a nanosuit in ...150 years, while the ceph are noobish. :3

We started to exist alot earlier (except you believe what those christian fanatics say - but then again, they also don't believe in natural selection and evolution, two existing concepts in nature).
The Ceph... I think there was a time mentioned in Crysis 1. That's of course only for those Ceph in C1, but those in C2 aren't that much younger either.

However, even NOW they don't take us serious even after the events of C1. For them, we're just insects - and who would think that an insect would run over you from a place you already cleared up and then shoots you in the back with an assault rifle? (Okay, real insects usually don't carry assault rifles around - but it's probably the best image I can come up with)

In the book, it's assumed that these tentacles are just a diversion. Everyone thinks "Oh great, they're unprotected, let's shoot at that tentacles", but in fact they sacrifice their tentacles and don't get much damage from it, while they shoot the ppl.

And if we're going to win this fight.....the N2 is pretty awesome, isn't it? But in teh book, a N2.2 is mentioned, which means that there's already something under construction.....and Alcatraz can't take off the N2, so it has to be Nomad that will wear the N2.2 and saves the world!!! >:()

He might be unable to take it off - but it's possible to upgrade it anyway. Just like when he used the syring on himself. That probably turned the N2 into the N2.1 storywise. Gameplay is no difference - but then again, there is also no real one between the 1.5 (MP-suit) and 2 (SP-suit) - except maybe how modules are managed.

Hmm...yes and no. Here's my opinion:

The MP-Suit is weaker in all points. The N2's armor mode is blocking 100% until the battery is empty. The MP-Suit block just a part of teh damage. N2 is with Mobility Enhance and Stealth Enhance able to run around cloaked for a much longer time than MP-Suit. (based on SP/MP-experience)
Sure, there must be differences because of the balancing, but that aside --> MP-Suit is nothing against N2.

Dude, That is why they named him Alcatraz.... like the prison. the Nanosuit imprisons him. If he took it off he would die... ruptured lungs, punctured heart, broken spin. Must I continue.
I hope it is Nomad, That would pwn! Man I miss that dude.
Is that the 'Crysis legion' book? I've been really wanting to get that.

Well, those differences are mainly balacing-wise. But in the active game, you can access the N2, too (sort of) in two ways. Maximum Nanosuit (CELL and Marines might yell "Spotted Nanosuit 2" if an enemy uses it) and having both biotics in "Extraction". Both aren't EXACTLY like the SP-one but then again, neither are the weapons (e.g. the M60 in SP got the ACOG and a Laser sight only. MP can use Red Dot, ACOG, extended mag and holo-attachment). But if we ignore those changes regarding balacing, we probably have about the same suit for 1.5 and 2.

In the Crysis 2 novel it is hypothesised that the tentacles are like the tails on a drop-tail lizard.
Bait.

So, the Ceph want humans to shoot their tentacles in order to draw fire away from more important bits like the head and chest.

That's a good thought! Now his name makes sense....almost philosophical.

And yes, it's Crysis Legion. It's not bad.....and if you read it, you'll see the nanosuit in another light...pretty scary.
Unfortunately there's no spoiler tag, otherwise I would give you a little sample of it.....

and: Nomad ftw!

@ Aegis: Yes, that's right.

@ Bindal: Yes, you are right. But you access the N2 with overloading the 1.5. And you can't use it for long, because it would destroy the 1.5 if you use it for a longer time. The 1.5 seems not to be made for the power of the N2. But you're definitely right about this point.
I would say, the Suit 1.5 is just like shareware. You get it, you can use it, but it's not a full version. You can crack it with overloading it, but it's still not the full version. I hope you can understand what I mean, because I'm not sure if I found the right words.

FYI, this is actually explained pretty well in the Crysis Legion novel. I believe a few will be up for grabs in the not so distant future on gamesas, as well as to the guys who earn the top XP during our XP weekend.

And you can purchase it from various retailers :)
