How do I change the search engine my browser auto uses?

Post » Thu Mar 31, 2011 12:52 am

A while ago for some reason my web browsers search changed from Google to Babylon. I'm using Firefox 4. Not the search box in the top right, but the search engine the browser uses when you just put a search term into the address book.

The search box in the top right is still Google but whenever I just type something into the address bar to search for, it comes up with the ad riddled Babylon. Not a big problem til recently when I started to notice the ads were becoming increasingly 'advlt'. Now because this is my work PC it's definitely something I'm worried about - I've not gone to any sites that would indicate that as something I'm 'interested' in??

So does anyone know how to change the standard search in Firefox 4?

A quick search resulted in:

- Type 'about:config' in the address bar
- Do a search for "babylon"
- Right click on every item found and select the option "Restore Default"

That's probably because your ISP changed something with their DNS.

3 options:

1. http://www.opendns.com/ (will make the search use Yahoo!)

2. http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/ (which I'm assuming will make the search Google, never actually used their DNS offering)

3. http://www.labnol.org/software/browsers/prevent-opendns-google-redirects-firefox-address-bar-ie/2662/

I would like to thank Google and the Academy, for which I wouldn't be here today. A special shout out to my parents and my brother-in-arms over at the studio - you guys are really great.
