What software to record Crysis 2 gameplay ?

Post » Wed Dec 15, 2010 3:10 am

Especially multiplayer. I tried FRAPS inferior resolution + half size. It runs constantly 60fps until things start to screw up then the fps drops to like 12fps. Tried various settings. Target fps = 60 + lock fps, Target fps = 30, don't lock etc. none of them could be used for extended period of time (like longer than 1 minute) Any ideas ?

I only know of 2 ways of doing it, Fraps and Xfire, but fraps gives better results, Xfire was very choppy. I used Fraps for Crysis 2 and it was ok anyway. It does slow the game down a little but the resulting video was fine. I've only used it on Single Player though.

Well I have found out that if I move the recording folder from my HDD to SSD the stuttering disappears. But so far the only way how to make it work relatively OK was to use target framerate 60 fps + lock fps. If I were to use target framerate 30fps and without locking fps (as I would like to) it will soon degrade to constant 30 fps = unplayable. So I have to record in 60fps locked (which is unnecessary high for the video and takes unnecessary space etc.) just to have solid 60fps in game without fluctuations while recording. 60 fps in game is playable but still suboptimal. Crytek should really come up with some demo recording feature. (I had to record in 1600x900 and capturing half size of frame to achieve 60 fps = poor quality)

ZD Soft Screen Recorder gives above average results and is not as power hungry as Fraps.

WeGame: Takes very little FPS off and its pretty good quality comparing to FRAPs taking 20-30 FPS off and **** quality (if recording in HALF)

If you happen to own a TV with HDMI and recording capability on USB drives, I suggest using the hardware solution.

There is a panasonic TV that costs 500€ and has this option so its not out of reach. If you don't have a TV.. get one! great for playing on the PC :)

If you want to keep using fraps, try a harddisk that isnt running your OS nor Crysis. works fine for me

Thanks for all the input I tried most of the apps mentioned here, and from those I've tried I would sort them as following:
fraps, weGame, playclaw, afterburner, xfire

Fraps (with target fps 60 and locked famerate) is still the only one with which I was able to manage constant 60 fps AND without stuttering (I had to record on fast SSD though, my storage HDD is probably too fragmented with just a little free space) And constant 60 fps without stuttering was possible only at res 1600x900 + half size capturing. If I set res to full HD + half size capturing then the FPS is fluctuating between 50-60 fps but it still feels stutter free. In other words with fraps the only problem is low fps or splitting avis to 4GB chunks. Otherwise the gameplay feels really smooth. That is reason why I found it to be best.

All the others were causing stuttering during multiplayer gameplay - even when recording to SSD and with me trying various settings (that is unless I haven't missed something). That is reason why I put fraps above all of them, despite some of them providing better fps than fraps (but feeling less smooth). I sorted rest of the apps based on my feeling what average fps I was getting with each of them assuming all other conditions were equal.

It may be different with different HW, like you probably wouldn't have any problems on hexacore or highly overclocked sandy-bridge (Crysis 2 is very CPU intensive) Unfortunately I am using just "old" Q9650@3.6GHz + GTX580 and recording on "high" (which translates to lowest settings)

PS: I still think that fraps is lame but not as lame as missing "record demo" functionality in Crysis2.
