Crysis 2 crashes every so often on Windows XP. HELP

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 12:52 am

Hi peeps,

Been playing Crysis 2 for a while now, gameplay is solid, technicalities not so. As you can see in the thread title, the game would crash to desktop every time I play the game. It could crash 20 mins into the game, 1 hour, the fact is that it crashes randomly.

Here's what I done to eradicate any obvious problems that may cause this:

1 ) I've recently updated my Sparkle GTS 250 LP graphics drivers to the latest one (as of writing, 270.51 beta- can't use 26x.xx drivers as they somehow give my PC infinite BSOD loops)

2) updated Windows XP SP3 (latest updates, though there haven't been any serious updates for a while now!)

3) Defragged and am positively sure there's no viruses/crap like that. If it did have viruses and stuff, then my PC would be slow and unresponsive as hell.

4) http://www.gamesas.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=15923&p=235006#p235006 Is a link to a similar topic regarding Crysis 2 crashing to desktop on a similar OS. I've posted in this thread as well, but no-one had the answer, and the thread looks close to being "obsolete".

Not sure if this is a big issue or an isolated one, but Crytek should sort this out- I don't want it to be another Fallout 3 ,where every so often it crashes to desktop, minus the fact I can't even Quicksave :(

PS:- My PC is well withint he requirements needed by the game, in case you forgotten

Yeah, got a crash pic- the app version's 1.1.0.0 but since updateing Crysis to patch 1.2 I've got pretty much the same error :(

Here it is:

I am the administrator of my own PC, 2GB DDR3 memory not playing up at all, and I doubt that anything would be conflicting with the game (antivirus set to 'game mode, and I told my firewall to 'shut up' when Iam running Crysis 2)

While I'm all for you installing Windows 7. There is nothing wrong with Windows XP. I've played a hour or so under XP and I've encountered no issues or crashes. While 2GB should be more than enough, you are right on the edge of the minimum. I ran a few tests over the weekend and using Windows 7 64bit and 2GB of ram would get me random game crashes. Though I ran the same test under XP and it worked fine. Maybe the difference is the video card, the Win7-64 system has a 8800GTS with 320MB the XP has a 5870 with 2GB. I should note, when running the same Win7-64 system with 6GB of ram it doesn't have any issues.

It's also naive to believe that you won't have game crashes in Windows 7, has you might have already seen in the thread you posted, someone running Win7-64 is getting the same crash as you. You might have dying memory, maybe a unhappy sound card. Have you tried running a benchmark program like Prime 95 and see how your system handles it ?

I'd try things like removing or disabling the sound card. If possible, swapping out the memory, if you have a friend you can swap with. Maybe disable the Network card and trying it in SP. Has noted try to stop or remove any program you can to see if it behaves any better.

Mine exits to desktop on occasion with no error message and the application compeltey shut down. But I blame my recording software WeGame. So yeah I should really look into WeGame forums for that lol.

Not that it may tell you anything better, but did oyu see if there was anything in \Crysis 2\LogBackups. Should be a log file to look at, though it may not tell you anything interesting.

Thanks for replying guys, and as for Mad_Murdock:

Have you tried running a benchmark program like Prime 95 and see how your system handles it

As a matter of fact, I did O'C my Atohlon II X2 250 CPU from 3Ghz to 3.6GHz (using the "EasyOC" feature on my MSi 770-C45 mobo). I've played Halo, COD4, Mass Effect (on high, if not highest settings) and other games without a hitch, just Crysis 2 seems to be a bugger. And Fallout 3- but this isn't the forum for it.

As for upgrading to Windows 7, my XP system also has Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit Sp1 installed (i.e. dual booting Xp and 7);

I've installed the Crysis 2 demo on Windows 7, but due to lack of knowledge, I thought it might automatically use DirectX 10 or 11, which IMO would slow down game performance. As we now know, so far It is only using DX9, but I only knew this after i installed Crysis 2 on XP, so now I cba to move my game files to Windows 7 :P
