Crysis 2 - My impressions and an honest review

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 8:22 am

Hi everyone,

I'm a gamer and I personally loved Crysis 1 and Warhead. Fantastic games, imo.

I bought Crysis 2 just because this game stands out of other shooters like COD for example, which hasn't got a engine upgrade since ages and is based on the 'shoot everyone you see' concept which made is popular among the younger players. It's a purely consolized game.

I've completed the Single Player campaign of Crysis 2 and I must say, I'm satisfied with the improvements in storyline and combat systems since the original Crysis. The graphics still are fantastic, though a grade lower than Crysis which still stands rock solid as the best looking shooter even after 4 years since its launch.

*One thing I'd like to mention is the lighting system in the game. It is absolutely fantastic, just like in C1. I haven't seen any other game that has such an amazing lighting system.

*I liked the sound effects in the game. The musical score by Hans Zimmer is the best I've seen in any game by far. Moreover, Crysis 2 empasizes you to use the Nanosuit powers to your advantage, something which was lacking just a bit in the original Crysis.

*Despite all those things that make this game great, there are unfortunately many areas where Crysis 2 falls short. I know that most of you must be aware of thess facts already but still I'd provide my own views on C2.

*I know Crysis 2 looks stunning but Crytek could've done a better job by providing us Advanced Options. High/Very High/Extreme... I mean What the........Never mind I'll pass on this one.

*Plus, there are low res textures (to cater for the consoles, obviously) and no DX11. The latter won't make a ground breaking difference, though but it cannot be ignored since it provides suport for Tesselation, etc and might improve performance on capable hardware.
I was glad to hear the DX11 Patch is on its way to the PC Community.

Lastly, the game is a little buggy for my liking. AI is sometimes all over the place and I've encountered many bugs like Nano Catalysts vanishing, etc. But I'm sure those will be fixed by the patches in future.

And for those who think Crytek betrayed us, the PC community, I'd say, NO! they haven't (Yet!).
Not upto our expectations? YES! but I think they'll learn from their mistakes because no one is perfect, sans Chuck Norris lol. :D

We, The PC Community, still are with you, Crytek, and we will be provided you listen to us and do not test our patience too much. Plus, we want more customisability and priority if you ever will make Crysis 3 because we are a generation ahead of the consoles at this moment.

FINAL SCORE: You decide on your own. I don't want to trigger any flame wars here.

Thanks a lot, if you managed to read this all along, lol. I'm always open for corrections and suggestions in my writing.

After a couple runs though the game I agree the lighting system is better, my only gripe is with the sunshafts/god rays. Crysis takes the cake in that department, i personally think they look so much better in the original. They blend and just feel better. In C2 they just seem cartoony and cheesy to me. This is running on Very High 1920X1200p. I want them crisp and clean. I'll wait for the editor and mods though, hopefully we can improve them a bit.

Hmm lighting is good but isn't the best out there.

I personally think Medal of Honor campaign had some immortal lighting.

The ****? I used to max that game on my 8600GT at 50+ FPS. I just remember a lot of oversaturated bright crap in MoH 2010, not good lighting.

Yeah the Sun Rays in the game look a level down from C1 to me as well but the overall environment lighting system and over bright effects are very well done. Overall, this is the best looking game you can run smoothly on a normal Gaming machine. This game doesn't torture your PC as much as what C1 did. OF course, I need to mention again it doesn't look better than Crysis 1.

@TheMob: Sorry but Medal Of Honor doesn't stand even close to Crysis 2, in my opinion. It had very average graphics with extremely low res textures with OK lighting. My friend could run it easily @720p @Medium on his Acer Laptop with stock Intel graphics.
MoH was a half-hearted game, imo.

Looking forward to Battlefield 3 now...Until then, it's all Crysis 2, for now. :)
Oh and did I forget mentioning Batman: Arkham City? :D

what really blows me away about the game is that i am playing the game with a 8800gt, 5500+ amd dual core chip, 2.6ghz. and it runs like a dream. no problems what so ever.

playing online with a 384k line. and getting 94 ping on local servers. now that is cool. :)

Nice review. Not praising crysis 2 too much but also not flaming it at the same time. As a score i would give crysis 2 um..... 8.
Also looking foward to batman arkham city, battlefield 3, assassins creed 3 whenever it releases, COD MW 3.
Cheers!!
