We need an option to disable SSAO for both SP/MP (INGAME)

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 3:10 am

As far as I can tell SSAO is the worst fps hog of all the effects used in Crysis 2. I tried running everything on extreme using the advanced graphics utility, and the turned SSAO off/on to see what performance gains were like.

Bottom line SSAO is completely useless and we should have the option to turn it off in the graphics menu screen. BFBC2 had this option and the performance gains were also very noticable when it was turned off.

NOTE: The advanced graphics utlity does let you turn SSAO off in SP, but in MP all settings return to their default values. CRYTEK this is the bare minimum you can do for us PC gamers, this needs to make it in the next patch.

Yes, that would be great, especially for those with older pcs (I have an an old core2duo 6300) among us.
So please crytek, give us some options to tweak the game! I dont care about motion blur or hdr effects - i just want to run the game smoothly

Heck it's not only older PCs that are affected. I have a 2010/2011 build with a Phenom II X4 3.4 Ghz and GTX 460 @ 815/2000/1630 and SSAO is butchering my framerates. Without it I would run the game smooth as silk on extreme settings.

Also SSAO only seems to be turned on when "extreme" settings are selected, but with the option to toggle SSAO many people would be able to play on "extreme" setting with much better performance.

I am going to take a screenshot with SSAO turned off/on. There is almost no difference whatsoever.

make an autoexec.cfg and type: "r_SSAO 0" and it's disabled.

If I enable or disable SSAO, I hardly recognize any difference. And I have a GTX460 without OC and only 768mb memory.

I have GTX 460 1 GB and I can tell there is a difference in performance.

r_SSAO=0 only works in SP.

Orly? I was told that the autoexec.cfg works in SP and MP....if I change the file, I loose fps in SP and MP, so there are obviously some changes. Maybe only the SSAO isn't affecting the MP, cuz everything else seems to work.

But you are right, in teh screens there is hardly any difference.

Try this, it shows the SSAO quite good. It's just the lights. And it isn't valid anymore, since it's from the leaked beta...

I think that none of the autoexec.cfg tweaks work in MP to be honest.

I think the best would be for CRYTEK to make it optional so you can toggle it in the graphics menu.

I hope one of the Crytek Mods sees this in the near future. SSAO needs to be toggled.

Can you not just add it to the system.cfg file?

no - unfortunately only very few commands work with that god-forsaken file...

It is clear what needs to be done, Crytek must enable ingame graphic settings, wo we can toggle the features that we want. There doesn't have to be a million parameters, but at least the really crucial one such as SSAO/shader and so forth.

aren't the cvars passed with the server it's hosted on? So it can only be turned off in MP if the server (if it's even possible) turns it off

A toggle in options would work best. It would also be useful to have separate graphic settings for SP & MP modes.
