Crysis 2 running like crap and I can't figure out why.

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 11:23 am

I've set it to it's lowest setting of "high" under the 3 graphical options and it just won't run smooth.

The framerate is laggy/choppy and the music cuts out on cutscenes, the opening one instead of looking and sounding amazing was running in slow mo with "cha" or "cuh" sounds every 3 seconds as the music cut out.

I've got a decent rig too, I have the latest NVIDIA driver 270.61. and I ran the first game no bother (This one was supposed to require less power) so I just don't understand this.

Windows 7 64 bit.
NVIDIA GeForce 230M.
4GB RAM.
i7 processor.

Errr.... that GPU is way too powerless. That's a notebook graphical processor, they just can't be compared with PC's. GTX 460M is nothing like GTX 460. How does other games run?

Fine, it lets me run every Source engined game on full spec and I never have any problems, same with Starcraft II but they mightn't be all that power hungry, however I can run Fallout 3 just fine (Not full spec but medium-high, I have to turn some things down but not all), Crysis 1, Far Cry 2 and other graphical power house games.

I beat Mafia II with no problem as well so I know the processor works for quad core games.

I must admit I don't know a lot about graphic cards and how they'd differ from being in a notebook, but I was told when I was on the verge of buying it that it had to have a good card because it's got a Blu Ray player. And upon checking it out on NVIDIA's site it said that the 230M was a 1gb HD card so I bought the machine.

And this is why I'm confused because Cry 2 only requires 512mb same as Fallout or Mafia and it doesn't even rewuire a quad core.

He says he ran Crysis 1 fine... IDK how though :/
I remember trying to run C1 on a GMA950, it ran at around 10fps, considering that even a **** FX5200 in my old PC runs much faster than the GMA950, I'm not really surprised at the 230M being able to run C1. But how can't it run C2?

Well as I say I never ran it on very high spec, but using it's auto checker it said I could run it on high and it ran fine. On the flying level near the end of Cry 1 it got a little choppy so I tuned things like the anti aliasing down and I turned it to medium graphics for the most part and it ran fine again.

I usually have to turn another thing right down though, the filtering, some games I have trouble running on over 4X anisotropic.

But again, I'll be honest, I'm not a techie and don't even understand what half of this stuff is, all I know is from playing and tweaking what games work with what settings.

Also on an unrelated note, I've no idea why this reckons I'm in the U.S as I've changed my profile 4 times now.

GT230 is way under (dont know if this sentence is correct, english is not my primary language) the minimum requeriments. And video memory (vRAM) is not the most important thing on a Graphic Card.

Memory Bus, Architecture, Stream processors, GPU Clock, and many other things are WAY more important than VRAM, and yes, GT230 is a low-end graphics card. Isn't made for heavy graphics, just simplier games, like half life 2, Unreal tournament 2004, and so on...

And come on, source engine is from 2004, actually, the first game of the engine was released on 2004, the development started in 2000.

(sorry for my bad english)

Well again all I can say is that I've not ran into this problem before and I buy a lot of new games. So obviously this is a cry engine 3 problem with my rig and I'll just have to avoid games with it in and hope that Deus Ex 3 and Duke run as I hate buying FPS' for consoles.

You can't compare apples to oranges. Trust me, GT230M is not cut out for this game and is the reason why it's choppy. Download some monitoring application like Afterburner from MSI to see how much % load your GPU is running on and I bet it would be running on 100% already while being laggy.

You forgot to mention what res you were using.

The absolute minimum is 1024 x 768 for the game to look decent. Might want to try 800 x 600 if your desperate.

And make sure v-sync is off.

First of all CE3 is not like CE2 because CE3 it is a multi-platform engine which is coded in different way than CE2 was. So in many cases CE3 code code can interact in wrong way with some GPUs or drivers causing low FPS, etc.
In your case both graphic and sound is showing signs of low performance coming from your hardware, and it's doesn't matter that you can play Crysis 1 or any other game without problem, fact is that your hardware can't handle CryEngine 3.
You can try various drivers even few months old, and see if there will be any changes, in most cases drivers are main problem of low performance in games IF GPU have even semi-decent power. If drivers won't help then for sure it is your hardware fault.

Well this is where I would really appreciate some help, because I've tried asking about this before and got no where. The monitor's size is 1920X1080 so I set everything to that, now I know that takes a lot of power. But whenever I set it to anything else I either don't get full screen or the system doesn't display it and it makes me reboot the game.

So with a 1920X1080 what sorts of resolutions will run?

Because I've tried 16XX's by XYZ and they tend not to work, same with 13XX's.

So I never know what to try and after the game has crashed 3 or 4 times I just revert back to 1920 even though it can cause choppy frames in hectic scenes in big games.
