Misleading Wording in the New MP Progression Vid

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 6:02 am

In the latest MP progression video at about the 2:20 mark at the top left of the screen you can clearly see "MULTIPLAYER CAMPAIGN"

Unless there is a cooperative story or Horde/FireFight/Zombie type game mode, the use of the term Campaign in conjunction with Multiplayer is blatantly misleading and should only say MULTIPLAYER.

Just because there's unlockables and a progression to it, does not make it a Campaign!

I noticed in the NanoSuit showroom the phrase 'Multiplayer Campaign' and it did confuse me a little ;D

I'm guessing they just mean the multiplayer aspect of the game.

Campaign doesn't mean "single player game".

Campaign: A series of operations undertaken to achieve a set goal; as, an election campaign, a military campaign, an advertising campaign; To take part in a campaign

The elements of levelling your character and unlocking things and improving your stats is in itself a campaign.

It might not be the dictionary definition but it is common parlance amongst gamers that the Campaign refers to the narrative driven, usually single-player component of a game.

Yes I'm aware of Webster's definition, thank you.

However, as Jac points out, its common parlance not only among gamers but for developers as well. EVERY other game developer when using the term Cooperative Campaign, it has always meant there was either a cooperative story element with AI or it was human players versus AI like in Horde/FF/Zombies.

I have never heard or seen a game dev ever refer to competitive multiplayer (human v. human) as a cooperative campaign. Until now.

Regardless of its intent, its misleading none the less.

At the end of the day it's not a big deal - in this instance the 'Multiplayer Campaign' refers to the general multiplayer aspect of the game.

With a level and unlocking system I can see why its called a campaign.

Modern Warfare 2 did a sligtly similar thing by saying what percentage through the multiplayer levels you were, to make it seem almost like some sort of campaign.

Yes, and is on coop multiplayer game mode, not as versus mode.
Anyway, if there is a coop mode I'll love it and most probably only play this. Imagine a community making mods for the coop mode, like l4d(2) have.
