Stealth Inconsistencies in Crysis

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 1:16 pm

I realize a lot of the community has moved on from Crysis to talking about Crysis 2, but I just got the game with that amazing Steam holiday discount. The game is incredible, and I'm trying to understand the mechanics as precisely as possible. I've been noticing that occasionally the stealth mechanics don't really work as it seems they should (though overall I love the stealth in this game).

One particular problem area, which admittedly may be a bit of an anomaly, is that first little area early on in Contact on the beach where you have to take out the jamming device (4 guards on the ground and a couple of boats circling in the water). Generally speaking, that entire hill seems to be a pretty funky area stealth wise. Often, even if you can't be seen by anyone, the target can't be seen by anyone, and you're well out of earshot of the other guards, somehow the other guards still instantly know when you shoot him; they turn yellow on radar and move to shoot off the flares.

However, the thing that makes me even more confident that the mechanics are faulty (at least in this part) is the contradictions. For example, when I'm proning on a rock near the bottom of the hill, completely undetected, and about to kill the near, right guard. All of the other guards are pretty far away and not even looking. If I take out my Pistol (silenced), cloak, press the crouch button to rise up off the ground, and shoot the guard, everyone suddenly becomes alerted. If I use the SCAR (silenced) instead, no one becomes aware. You can do these trials side by side in exactly the same way and these will be the results consistently. I have the save file if anyone wants me to send it to them so they can try it out (it wouldn't let me attach it), unless there's something that would prevent someone from playing my save file--not sure on that. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar things (the game has been extremely buggy for me at some parts) or if anyone has an explanation for this. I also just wanted to point this out in the hopes that such issues could be avoided in Crysis 2. Thanks.

I only know of the first issue, and that has to do with the outdated AI system Crytek used.

Crysis 2 AI was completely overhauled so hopefully any issues can be fixed. :)

I can take them all out without any of them realising I was there, the thing is that koreans can hear your silenced bullets, thats it.........they can hear them. They'll usually only use a flare if the alert bar goes around orange/yellow like 3/4 the way up. Therefore you change to semi auto and get headshots on the koreans without any other korean being around them and the koreans won't notice. For example the korean standing around where all the chickens are to the far right and the korean standing to the far left at the bottom of the left hand trail through the bushes. Also scar silenced bullets seem to be louder then fy71 silenced bullets :S I actually don't know why that is. But yeh the stealth works well in all the places of crysis I've played with the exception of helicopters that can see you through trees and forests D:.

OK good, I'm glad to know Crysis 2 has a chance of being fixed; I love the game, but little things like this can be frustrating.

@ Lexor
I'm interested to know that's how it works for you because it's not how it works for me. Maybe it is just buggy for me; as I said, I had a lot of bugs throughout the game, particularly the last level as many people did. For me, with ALL other variables being equal they will be alerted when I use the silenced Pistol and NOT alerted when I use the silenced SCAR, which makes no sense. A round fired from a silenced rifle is quieter than a round fired from a silenced pistol? Even if that were true, it has nothing to do with the sound because if I fire EITHER round into the GROUND, then no one is alerted. The more I test it the more I'm convinced that there is something funky that happens when the bullet hits the target. There's another little village in Contact where if you shoot the guards out on the pier, everyone in the village is alerted, but if you shoot bullets into the water, into the wooden hut, or (rather comically) even into an explosive barrel (thus blowing it up), NO ONE in the village is alerted. I'm saying "you" here, but maybe it really is just my game that's buggy like this--not sure. Looking forward to try it in Crysis 2.

The latest Crysis 2 video shows a silenced pistol being used with stealth mode... Stealth shot then stealthed again with no alert. Hopefully that means your issue will be fixed.

Awesome :D Good catch. Crysis 2 is looking great. I'm particularly glad the aliens will be bipedal; the later parts in Crysis against the aliens weren't half as fun as the earlier parts against Koreans imo--largely because the aliens flew around I think.
