Why online DRM?

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 2:27 am

It doesn't really stop piracy, but it prolongs the time it takes to crack the game. And this new StarForce DRM is loaded with anti-crack defenses from what I hear. Very hard to crack. So, probably no crack for a long time, and everyone who really wants the game ends up buying it. This, and a good demo to show people what they're getting are the way to sell a game. If the DRM is good, it might take pirates 2 years to crack the game. By then, Crytek has made all the sales it needs to. Also, for people who are biching about playing the game years later, well, the pirates will have cracked it and you can just get rid of the DRM then.
Thats all very nice but you completely miss my point. You will lose those buyers like me who boycott DRM.
And companies usually don't get rid of the DRM in games you can buy from the store.
And to the people who don't want to put their CDs in the drive: Have you ever played a game from about 5 years ago? There was nearly no DRM there and you had to play with the CD/DVD inside.
I see this the only way to keep control over the game I bought.
An online DRM server will take this control away from me so I don't support that.
You cannot fight the piracy war on the back of paying customers, I pay for my games, why do I have to be bothered with all the DRM checks? I bought the game and only have disadvantages, the pirates do get a better game experience than me.
A bit mixed up thoughts, but I think my point is clear ;)

I know your frustration, but you're only shooting yourself in the foot. I'm sure a bulk of their sales will come on the consoles anyway so all you're doing is hurting the PC industry. Do you feel there's a fall in the PC industry? I'm sure you do. However you won't buy games with piracy protection to protect against the very thing that causes them to be there in the first place? So I assume you're intending to pirate then. Congratulations, you're the very reason such things exist in the first place. I hope you can appreciate the irony of the situation. You can't have it both ways. I feel that your entire argument is completely ridiculous because it's circular reasoning.

Either that or you could just buy it on an xbox or ps3. Then you don't have to worry about it.

Also about CD check, even games as old as System Shock 2 in 1997 had CD check. I'm sure there are others but it's the oldest one I can think of at the moment.

Hi, as I said, no, I won't pirate games. I want to buy good games, the last ones were NfS Shift and Dragon Age Origins. Both do not have online DRM. I don't have problems with a simple CD/DVD Check, but I do not want DRM or any driver or such software on my PC thats checking the CD (Starforce).
Of course my actions (or lack of them) are hurting PC industry. But shall I buy things I do not want, only that new PC games are developed with more DRM that I do not want, either?
I am the customer and I decide what I buy.
And as I said, Crysis 1 did just have a normal CD check, so what is the problem in implementing this for Crysis 2, too?

It doesn't need that 5 time installation crap does it? Because I went through 2 copies of Crysis Warhead just by overclocking or adding a different type of ram. It got to the point where I spent about $100 on one game and EA wouldn't help at all even when I used the deactivation tool. Hopefully Crysis 2 will come to Steam just for that reason. If not than I'm only buying one copy and one copy alone unless someone buys me another through Steam for a special occasion. I'm sick of these companies taking advantage of honest PC gamers just because of a few bad apples. Just because I build my own gaming system doesn't mean you can take advantage of me or the other PC gaming enthusiasts. Realistically speaking us PC users are more likely to buy multiple copies because we have multiple computers.

I'd go for the same level of sales as bad company 2. Which is a pretty even split between all 3 platforms at release (PC slightly ahead), then PC sales storm ahead while the console market leeches off the developers in the second hand market.

PC sales are generally equal to or greater than one of the console platforms :)

Steam alone is estimated to have 10-15% share of the ENTIRE market (yes, including wii, ps3 and xbox) for games for example.

People just base sales of retail and then focus on black ops, a game which won't do as well on PC ('only' about 4-5m copies most likely) because it's a consolised noobfest for the most part :)

As long as Crysis 2 on the Pc has a one time form of validation. We'll be fine! ;)

I can't say it applies to me here. I've avoided EA games simply because they do not offer Steam integration. They're the only publisher that I would consider pirating from these days. Even 'evil' Activision at least offers Steam integration with their COD titles. Crysis 2 looks good, but there's so many FPS out there, so I just want a definite answer.

Will Crysis 2 have Steam integration or not?

If the answer is no, I'll cancel my pre-order and pick up the other AAA FPS released soon (Homefront, MW3, Brink, etc).

I don't understand why EA is the only major publisher that doesn't use Steam in their retail copies. Even Assassin's Creed Brotherhood will use Steam as a DRM. Looks like Crysis 2 won't be a part of the 70+ games I alread have on my Steam account.

Why would anyone give the ability away to play their game whenever they want instead of giving the control over to some server that can be shut down anytime? I will never understand that.

Almost all of my games are purchased via steam, it's THE easiest and fastest way.
I hope C2 will be available for pre-order on Steam. That would make my life alot easier.
and yeah bc2 sold better on PC than it did on ps3 or xbox360.

I hope it will not come to steam. Steam got to many workarounds for crackers and hackers. I know one maybe 2 people that have hacked steam for years (the get all games hack) and can play it online too.
