Core 2 Duo bottlneck??

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 5:03 am

Hello,
I know there is a lot of threads very similar to this but i just want to make sure. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo right now clocked at 3.7ghz with an asus 4770. I was wondering if I got a 6850 that my processor would be bottlenecking my video card. Thank you much.

Nobody can tell you until the game is released. Crytek have said that the Cryengine 3 is capable of utilising multi-core systems. I've heard it can use up to 8 cores (correct me if I'm wrong). That said, very few engines can really benefit from more than two cores as the coding becomes exponentially more complex and threads get out of order.

I would expect a dual core running at a high clock like yours should be fine.

That is kind of how I was thinking. Thank you very much pretty sure I will be getting the 6850 now.

I like to know the same thing. All I know is that the answer isn't a simple yes or no. It depends on the resolution, settings and game (which is crysis 2 in this case ofc) you will play. For me it's an E8400 @ 4 Ghz and I'm thinking of getting a 560Ti OC or 6950. I wanna game at 1920x1200 with settings cranked up as much as possible. Not sure if it's worth it yet. I'll have to play around with my current rig some more to see when and where I'm GPU (4850x2) bottlenecked. I'd also like to see if there will be bundles. Like buying a new GPU and getting Crysis 2 with it. Is there any word of such deals?

For a few week i had a 3.0ghzOC Q6600 with the 6950, and it was bottlenecking the gpu in crysis wars, changed cpu to i5 2500k and no problems now ;)

You are gonna have some bottleneck. That doesnt mean that you shouldnt buy the card if u plan to upgrade you cpu also, when u can afford it.Bottleneck doesnt dmg your cpu or gpu so dont be afraid for that

I was worried if the CPU or GPU could suffer damage due to a bottleneck. Seems not. Thanks for confirming that!

I know that it wont damage the gpu or cpu. But yeah ill probably upgrade to windows 7 and get the new gpu now and later on I will upgrade the cpu. I also have 4gb ddr2 @ 1066mhz so i should be good there.

Bottlenecks don't damage parts. All it means is that your video card is so much faster than the processor, that its actually idling and waiting for the processor to send it more information to calculate and render. Therefore if you do have a bottleneck, that means that your video card is not working to its potential since its waiting on the processor to catch up and send more work.

At 3.7GHz you should be okay, since the 6850 is a rather low end card out of the current generation. If you were to get a 6970 though, then I would expect some bottlenecking until you upgrade your processor to an i7.

Thank you very much, i probably will upgrade to an i7 eventually but right now I don't have the money to do that and i think the core 2 duo @ 3.7ghz will suffice.

-.-
6850 isnt a super high end card
at 3.7ghz the bottleneck would be so small if any at all
youre fine dude

You definitely need Core 2 Quad but it depends on how the game is greedly optimized. I'm beginning to think games like Black Ops are purposely being optimized for high-end hardware so that people upgrade even though you only need Dual core to get 60+ FPS on a friggin DX9 game. I also suspect Nvidia and other hardware companies have some kind of contract between the publishers so that game developers get paid more or half of sales that Nvidia and other companies make from upgrades.

I can already see the Nvidia logo on Crysis 2.

Bottlenecks are very relative, the easyest way i know to check them is using a Hardware Monitor like MSI Afterburner, if your GPU usage is at 95~99%, you dont have a bottleneck, and if you do, the performance impact is negligible.

Get the i5 2500k, it's the best choice for gaming atm by far.
