Eventually he can just upgrade his CPU with a Phenom II x4. (offcourse if he has a AM2+ socket) yes ram will bottleneck,he,s got old mobo,no it wont work good bla bla bla.Maybe he is on a tight budget.Did you considere that? Stop telling him what to buy, instead help him with what he has.

Look man first try to solve the problem revolving around your hardware. PSU upgrade.i would recomend that first and foremost. you have a 450w psu but maybe its specs are below minimun regarding on single rail amperage.

This is the one i have in my rig.

He don't need to replace anything, but it is an option.

First things to do is to test graphic card on other PC, if that card works fine with Crysis 2 on other PC then move on to next step.
When we will be know that card is ok, time to test PC withother PSU, and 450W from Corsair will be perfect for his rig (max. 500W but it's just and option), there is no need for PSU higher that 500W.
Last thing to do if card is OK, and PSU is not a reason for black screen is to upgrade CPU on something faster but still fitting into his socket AM2 socket.

PS. Also if you ahve those 2gb of ram try borrow from someone ram and test PC with more ram. Just remember RAM need to be exactly same as you have now, by this i mean same TIMING.

Well this is what happens when people try to combine old PC parts with newest ;/

@ the OP. If that new set-up you listed is made up in the shop, there is better than a good chance that it will come with a crappy psu too.
Upgrading the motherboard will do nothing for you atm.

MSI is a quality make, DDR3 is a nice speed, however you'd want at least a quad core CPU, with the virtual tech nowadays some processors have twelve cores, TWELVE.

It's better but a q9300 or q9400 would be better cause the q8300 doesn't OC very well, but if you're not gonna OC then the 8300 should be fine, i overclock mine from 2.8 to 4.2.(i5 760 - good price & good performance).

Use the 275.27 beta nvidia driver when you upgrade, at least until the next official one is out, the 550 ti seems an ok card so you should be good to go.

Just for interest >>

Fo Sho! :D

In the last few months i been through gtx 460, 470, and now 580, the five series has new tech and works solidly. (the 570 can suffer overheating if OCed too much).

I'm sure it's a fine card you have, now up the voltage on it and start OCing! :D

just have read only the first page. well with darker or black screen porbs i didnt have it, it could be the cpu, or maybe ram too.

i had first core 2 duo 2x2.66ghz, ocz 2x2gb ddr2 800mhz vista 32bit and geforce gtx285. i could maxed out by lower resulution 1360x768 or 1152xsomething else.
last 2 month i boguht core i7 2600k 4x3.4ghz 4x4gb ddr3 1600mhz (runs only 1333mhz), win7 64-bit and still use gtx 285. now i can max out everything on 23" monitor.

and think, the gtx285 came out between 2008 and 2009 and was the fastest single-gpu. dont know what i miss on crysis 2 without gtx 5-series but at the moment im glade and use dvi-d port. anyway i look how long i can hold on without gtx 580, maybe i am lucky and can wait if there comes dx12 and gtx6 series with dx12 support:D (just a thought/hope/imaging, nothing know, heard about this :D )

-Intel Core2Quad Q8300 2.5
-LG 22X DVD+/-RW SATA (DVD drive)

Ok let's sort it out...

550W thats to much so you can save some money if you buy 450-500W like i said. 450W good quality PSU is better than 450W off-brand PSU, this is how it works....

MSI G41M-P35 Intel G41.. well this is Mboard with fused Graphic Card, basically not good, MSI ahve great mboards but try to find something without graphic card marged with Mboard. Maybe other model from MSI or even Gigabyte.

6GB of ram is to much, 4GB it is MAX which any game will be ever able to use, so save some moany and buy 2x 2GB ;)

As for processor, yea it should work.

YOu are buying this PC from some online shop? If yes then link site, maybe we can help you build something better even if you are short on money. Ohh and tell me how much MAX. money you want to spend on this PC.

Actually you just give me idea.... try to declock your graphic card, lets say drop memory and core clock by 10 Mhz lower than default, then check game if still will be black screen, and if still there is black screen drop it down by another 10mhz.
Im not sure but some people said something that lowering Gfx card timing on core and memory help with some problems in game o.O

You know do this, and we will see what happens :o

Your system easily should play Crysis 2, you must be having other issues.

You get any error messages returned? Why are you saying you don't have enought RAM?

Also... it's NOT the wattage that is the most important thing, it's the AMPS on the 12v+ rail. What's the output on your 12v+ rail of your powersupply?

For example, I have a Corsair 750XT 750 watt powersupply with 62A on the 12v+ rail. You could have the right amount of watts, but crappy output on your 12v+ rail and it not supply enought power to your PCI-Express slots, thus gaming goes down the tube!

What "brand powersupply" and "model number" do you have?
