Keyboard setup for lefties.

Post » Fri Jun 03, 2011 12:08 am

I've mostly played on console recently but I'm giving the PC a shot (esp w/Crysis 2 demo.) Anyway, since I mouse left handed I'm using my right hand to do the keyboard...it's a little awkward as the keyboard layout is assuming you're using your left hand. Any recommended configurations for lefties or do most lefties mouse right handed playing games. I've been struggling in game and while I'm not a good player I think if there is a standard "lefty" setup on the keyboard it might help.

Thanks!

I am right handed but I do not use the wasd keys, I use the arrow keys and all the keys around it including the numpad, like 0 for jump, 1 for melee, right Ctrl for duck, etc.-.
Try using this keys to see if they are more comfortable for you. Perhaps you'll find better using right Ctrl for jump and 0 for duck.

Thanks for the suggestion! That seems worth trying as the whole reason the numpad was put there is for quicker data entry.

Imo in terms of ergonomics the arrow keys are rather inefficient, while it may seem natural to use them as a lefty other keys are located rather far from them ie armour/stealth toggle (unless you have a compact keyboard). I'm not a lefty myself but one of my best mates who is uses the IJKL combo (opposite of WASD), almost like a mirror image of the default keys. IJKL as movement U and P as armour/stealth, H as either melee/use and so forth while keeping the space bar as jump, opposite SHIFT for sprint and right CRTL for crouch. Its just using the arrow keys means you have to reach up or to the side quite a way in order to get to other keys while IJKL gives you alot more keys in a shorter distance

i played with left hand setup since...ever. it has depended on games, perhaps the simpler style ones the better, as there is a limit to key choice/number when using the seperated arrow keys. usually 0/ins used for zoom down sights - using small finger off others using the arrows. thumb to right ctrl for either prone, if no prone is a game...crouch. if both are in a game crouch suffers and its over at c or something...meaning that is not a quick to do. right shift for run/speed. 1/end maybe melee or special grenade etc. 2 the same sorta, whatever a game needs. large middle enter for grenade, so again that isn't that quick, but still ok. maybe delete and page down above the arrow keys for lean etc, if a game has em, but again not a regular able to use thing there with fingers attached to arrow keys for moving. Right mouse button always for jump in any game and wheel for gun cycle. little other ways i reakon for a lefty

Thanks again for the feedback! LOL..well if you're very left handed and mouse left handed you'll naturally want to do it the opposite way than a righty. :-) Anyway I tried the ijkl method (I actually tried it in BF2 since they have a SP mode.) I remapped keys around that to be equivalent of the the ones on the left hand side of the keyboard and it seemed to work pretty well...it sounds weird but I felt I was seeing the enemies better (although I don't know how much that has to do with having a more comfortable configuration.) The only thing is I wish developers would let users select a default "lefties" configuration rather than have to remap the "standard" configuration key by key. (I put that in the appropriate suggestions thread.)
